My husband and I went to a similar type of restaurant where it was "dinner and a movie". This particular restaurant has a movie of the month and you don't know what movie they will feauture until you get there and its written on the menu. They do only show "old" movies and after the movie there is dessert and a discussion led by a retired Hollywood assistant movie director (I don't recall his name at the moment).

The movie they featured when we there was "The Passion of Joan of Arc." It was a silent movie and for me I did not like it due to the content of the story. During the discussion, this director said there has never been a film like it. I interjected and said there was the movie "St. Joan" starring Richard Widmark , and of course this jogged his memory and he rembered that film. If I go back there again, I will propose that they show an RW film in the future....we'll see.
It's interesting to see that there are other restaurants doing this same type of thing with the dinner/movie concept. It's alot of fun.

Backlash is a pretty good suspense story set in a western locale.  RW plays Jim Slater, a man on a quest to find the man he believes is responsible for the death of his father.  He soon crosses paths with Donna Reed's character, Karyl Orton, who is seeking out information from similar sources.  She is on the trail of a gold stash that is rumoured to be buried by her husband and his partners before they were ambushed by Apaches.  It becomes clear that Jim thinks his father was one of those ill fated men and he believes that one of the partners got away and left the others to die.  Jim and Karyl are at odds at first and run afoul of others who also have gold fever.  After a rocky start, they team up and work towards answering the questions plaguing them to a rather satisfying, if somewhat predictable conclusion.

I thought this movie was better than your standard oater because the characters where given solid backstories that were deftly woven into the story.  This helped me understand some of their less than honourable actions at times.  The main characters are 3 dimensional and I thought there is pretty good chemistry between RW and DR.  The dialogue is above average, and quite witty at times.  I have pasted an excerpt below of some lines from my favorite scene, courtesy of Val's screenplay transcription, posted on the RWFC Yahoo website.

Jim: You know if I was smart I run you out of here.

Karyl:   Why don't you?         Jim:  I'm not smart . . .and you're good lookin'

Karyl:  Oh don't tell me that makes any difference to you.

Jim: At times it does.

Karyl:  With a shoulder like this tonight is not one of those times.

Jim: Why not?  (Carol reaches over and picks a knife from his saddle pack, Jim pulls down his neckerchief and says)  Help youself!

Karyll:  It's a beautiful thought.

Jim:  You know you're right about tonight! (Carol gets up and goes over to her horse. She gets a little bottle out from the saddlebag and throws it to Jim who catches it.)

Karyl:  Here, try this, it might help. (She takes a clean blouse from the saddlebag and puts it on. Jim spills out a tablet from the bottle and swallows it.)

Jim:   Arsenic?         Karyl:  Could be!  (She sits down by his side)

As an extra bonus, Harry Morgan plays a supporting role as one of the brothers out to get RW's character.  William Campbell as Johnny Cool is also a fun and steals his fair share of scenes.

This film gets better with repeated viewings.  I pick up something new each time.  This movie airs frequently on North American TV on the AMC network.  Unfortunately, they air a cropped pan and scan version.  I was lucky enough to watch the widescreen version on a R2 PAL disc, and what a treat that was.  Let's keep our fingers crossed for a North American R1 NTSC widescreen release on DVD soon.

To begin with, I was very wondered though I did not know how such a document flowed out though it was not certain whether this one was a real document.
The management of the movie company might have been considerably careless in old days.
Certainly, I do not think that it is permitted by the protection of personal information.
(Though it is certain that I was interested in his appearance fee,)
I cannot also have a too good impression for such the one's being marketed though any information on his film is felt interesting as one of the fans.

I will have introduced this information including so here.

Best wishes,
Reiko

I don't know how I feel about this sort of item being put into the public domain. Knowing what a private man he was, I suspect that he would hate for his personal finances to be made public. Equally it's always interesting to know background information about his films.  Where does the boundary line sit between invasion of privacy and legitimate, fair play public interest.
What's for sure is that the vendor is selling it to make money, certainly not to give fans interesting information.

Some time back, before he died,  there was an RW tax exemption return or the like for sale. Did the vendor have his permission to launch it's sale on the net?  I think not.  On that point alone I think I have to be against this type of document's availability. Am I being over presumptive /protective of his interests?  What do you all think?

You bring up and interesting point Val!
I think there are cultural and generational differences with respect to this kind of information.  Salary disclosures for modern film stars is common place.  I have no problem with this type of document being "out there".  I also think once you are dead and famous, this stuff is bound to happen.  But I can understand why some people would feel differently.  I don't feel comfortable presuming how RW felt about this.  He shunned the Hollywood party scene to be sure; can we extrapolate further?

My salary has been published in the local newspaper on an annual basis as a I am salaried by a government agency, thus it is part of the "public record" and deemed newsworthy on an annual basis.  This is well known by my neighbours.  I can't be too sensitive about the expectation of privacy regarding my income, so I in the scheme of things, this document is not a huge invasion IMO.   That is not to say I would casually ask anyone how much they made or snoop in someones papers as a party guest.  That is still bad manners IMO.  But I wouldn't shield my eyes from a document that I stumbled across publicly that had that type of info on it.  Also, I have no expectations of privacy about anything once I am dead.

From a purely business point of view, being private about income works against the employed!  That is why collective bargaining works.  Before our salaries were published throughout the province, the discrepancy was startling.  Some people who worked in the same cities but different locations in the same professions were paid 50% more than their colleagues.  Over time, the lowest paid were brought up to a fairer level.  It has worked to our advantage.  I can live with the downside of less privacy, I have my price!

Martin,

Even though there was no mention of Richard, it was nevertheless an interesting one hour story of the Lux Radio Theatre, from it's beginning in New York through it's move to Hollywood and then to it's conclusion due to the advent of television.

Anyone wanting a CD of this show need only ask.

Derek.

Hello,

As has been mentioned before Mr Widmark did some great radio dramas in his early career.

On Saturday on BBC Radio Four (BBC's flagship radio station) there is a documentary devoted to Hollywood stars who appeared on radio. It will be interesting to listen to see if he is mentioned.

Every Saturday night at 8pm they have an hour long programme called The Archive Hour where they have interesting themed programmes on a great variety of topics which make use of radio archive material. I catch it when I can and will certainly listen out for this one.

There is something about radio dramas that can be especially entertaining. As someone once said the audience make up the pictures. Certainly RW's radio work was of very high quality.

All the best,
Martin

Hi Debbie,

Glad to hear that.

Oh don't tempt me Indiana, PA return would be nice. I still have great memories
of meeting you and seeing the museum.

Best wishes,
Martin

love listening to those radio dramas.  I find that they are so descriptive that
I can envision every footstep the character takes.

Derek - Was it because Burt and James Cagney all danced in one or more of their films and Richard never did?  Rita

No correct answer yet, but you are all correct in concentrating on Richard rather than the other three!

Why is Richard the odd man out in this famous group, Robert Mitchum, Burt Lancaster, James Cagney & Richard Widmark?

Nothing to do with their films nor their physical appearences.

Derek.
