Heya everyone!
Sorry about the silence. I have recently finished working on the
floorplan for the event as well as had a few very successful meetings
with regards to entertainment. I was also waiting for a new power
adapter to arrive so I could use my laptop again...and today I am back
in full swing! So...here we go! :)
Staff News:
Upcoming meeting this month. I will send out the Evite soon. If you
are interested (and available) to assist with the event, please email
me at xatriancrux@yahoodotcom. I recently purchased some lighting
equipment for small set pieces...which leads to the texted revelation
that this upcoming meeting, in particular, will be regarding set
design and construction.
Promotion & Team News:
New and improved flyers (the official ones at last - not the first
drafts which were on multi-colored FLO paper from my home printer)
will be printed and available in a couple of weeks. If you can help
with the distribution of these, I would very much love this. I am
looking to get these out all over CA and beyond, including hotspots
such as campuses, book and game stores, downtown party areas and
clubs, conventions, and more!
Music & Entertainment:
Goza'Nootara (unique opera singer), Northern Fae Repertory Theatre,
Gothic Tribal Bellydance troup (Sashi with a possible suspension act
backdropping the dancers), two special and talented gogo
dancers, and the awesome DJ 5arah are confirmed. The famous,
wonderful, and amazingly entertaining "Ming & Ping" are also in the
works to be booked for the show (check out their site:
http://www.mingping.com ) More to be posted soon, as the list expands!
*REMEMBER: This event is open to roleplayers as well as mundanes,
though costume is required and respect is a must. *grin*
XC Website & Rules updates:
The (game mechanics) system is on the way, but you can still
pre-register now! Go to the link "Attend" for more info. In
addition, I will be also announcing tonight that this event will be
BYOB, however, these drinks will not have any in-character applicable
effect and hopefully, will not be abused in real-effect either.
Please make sure to keep yourself in the best condition to administer
the ultimate respect to every attendee and to each individual's event
experience. I want everyone to have an awesomely fun time.
That's all for now. Hope to see everyone there at Xatrian Crux's
grand opening!
Cheers!

Tartakovsky Directing Dark Crystal Sequel
Source: The Jim Henson Company February 1, 2006
Award-winning animation director Genndy Tartakovsky, who created the
hit series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Samurai Jack and Dexter's
Laboratory, will direct Power of the Dark Crystal, the much
anticipated sequel to The Jim Henson Company's 1982 classic fantasy
film. The announcement was made today by Lisa Henson, co-CEO of The
Jim Henson Company and a producer on the film.
Additionally, Tartakovsky's newest venture, Orphanage Animation
Studios, has been brought on board as a producing partner to head up
the CG animation elements that will be incorporated with the film's
live-action animatronic characters. Legendary fantasy artist Brian
Froud, designer of the original film, will return to design the new
characters. Odyssey Entertainment is representing worldwide sales and
distribution on the film.
Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the
world has once again fallen into darkness, Power of the Dark Crystal
follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who,
together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary
Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the
center of the planet.
"As an auteur of such exciting and fantastical adventure projects,
Genndy is the perfect director to bring to life 'Power of the Dark
Crystal,'" said Lisa Henson. "I am sure that his visualization of
Brian Froud's designs will thrill fans of the original film as well
as audiences who are meeting these beloved characters for the first
time."
Genndy Tartakovsky said, "The original 'Dark Crystal' was one of the
most inspirational and imaginative pictures of its time, so it's a
real honor for me to be able to bring the world of 'The Dark Crystal'
to a whole new generation."
The sequel is only one of several projects exploring the world of The
Dark Crystal, a fan favorite that has remained consistently strong
with worldwide home video and DVD sales. Other projects include an
animated television series, a manga series from Tokyo Pop, and myriad
licensed products such as books, apparel and collectible sculptures.
Power of the Dark Crystal is a production of The Jim Henson Company
in association with Orphanage Animation Studios. With a screenplay by
Annette Duffy and David Odell, the film will be produced by Lisa
Henson and Orphanage Animation Studios Chairman Scott Stewart.
Executive Producers will be Brian Henson with Ralph Kamp and Louise
Goodsill of Odyssey Entertainment.
Ralph Kamp and Louise Goodsill commented, "The original film remains
a classic and it's an honor to add 'Power of the Dark Crystal' to our
strong family line up. With Genndy and Orphanage Animation Studios
joining The Jim Henson Company, the final creative elements are in
place, and we know Berlin will be busy for us as we start the process
of bringing this long-awaited sequel to its many fans around the
world."

Hello everyone,
Xatrian Crux ( xatriancrux.com for more info) is a LARP (live-action
roleplaying) Dance Club. A one day event which will be held in the
later parts of next year in Southern California.
Basically, you come in costume AND in character (in a role), keeping
your character's stats on you, and walk into another world of
entertainment and socializing with others who are doing the same.
It's free-style fun where the only thing guaranteed is that you will
be entertained by amazing otherworldly creatures on a stage bound to
the floor of this bio-spaceship's main hall, get something to drink
and snack on, have the chance to dance the night away to great music,
and get to interact with all sorts of kindly and wicked types, even
getting the chance to jump into a fight or storyline here and there.
And the staff (bartender, bouncers, DJ, club owner...), they're all in
character as well and deep into the scene along with you.
Picture the scene in Star Wars where the infamous deal between Han and
Luke takes place... Alien performers, and patrons fill the scene
around them. Now expand that into a dance club and step inside. Peer
in on noble elves and space pirates sitting side by side discussing
who-knows-what. Pass by shady characters plotting in dark corners and
experience the unusual and often-times unwelcomed entrances of strange
sorts and trouble makers. Dance between a saurian and an angel to
strange and familiar music.
This is Xatrian Crux.
If you're interested in attending, check out the website - XatrianCrux.com
Join the yahoo group Xatrian Crux, and the Forum (linked to the
Xatrian Crux website) to stay updated and/or get involved. You can
also find Xatrian Crux and other LARP event updates through
MySpace.com Group "LARP Alliance".

Henson planning Dark Crystal sequel
"The Power of the Dark Crystal" features Jen and Kira as king and
queen fighting to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again
split.
By Greg James
May 13, 2005
Varity reported that The Jim Henson Company is planning on making a
sequel to the 1982 fantasy classic "The Dark Crystal".
The film, which is titled "The Power of the Dark Crystal", has been
written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show) and
Annette Duffy. No director is yet attached to the film which will
start shooting this fall and is planned for a 2007 release. The film
will combine live-action animatronic characters with CG animation.
Like its predecessor, the film hopes to push the boundaries of
puppetry, special effects, and visual story-telling.
The story for the film is set many years after the original movie.
The first film's original heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen,
and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again
split.
Any further cast and crew announcements have not been made. But it
has been cited that The Jim Henson Company wants to involve many of
the people who worked on the original movie (such as Brian Froud and
Frank Oz). The official word on the cast & crew should be made later
this year once production picks up on the project.
The Jim Henson Company had tossed around ideas of a sequel (or
prequel) over the years. In the late '90s there was strong support
from many Henson executives, led by Brian Henson, to make a prequel
to the 1982 film. Sadly the plans never materialized; but now that
the company is "Muppet-free" they want to work to bring back many of
their existing productions and franchises.
The film has built a strong cult-following since 1982 and mixed with
the new surge in "fantasy world" films in the recent years, Henson
feels that now is the perfect time to bring back the world of the
Dark Crystal.
The company is also working on developing animated series,
interactive games and other related media as well.
I would be interested....I have never run a group before....but I
would give it my best shot...:)

I haven't done a thing with this group in a long time because it just
seems like I don't have any spare time to do it. I originally took it
over for the owner and hoped to keep it up and alive. So if anyone
would be interested to take over as moderater for me I would gladly

love to see it up and running again. Thanks!
The 1983 Marvel movie adaptation, issues 1 and 2 (the complete set).
in VF-to-NM condition, bagged and boarded. $5 plus shipping and
handling. E-mail me if you're interested.
My name is Skull Bearer, I am 19 and first saw the Dark Crystal aged
5 while spending a holiday at my French Grandmother's house. I
cannot begin to describe how much I adored the film, I can say,
however, that the flyleaves of every picture book I had were covered
in childish doodles of the Skeksis, the three suns, and the crystal.
I daydreamt about it for years, I still do.
Now, fourteen years on, I have every book of the Dark Crystal I
could get my greedy little paws on, including the first edition of
the World of the Dark Crystal (thanks be to my stepfather who got it
for my 14th birthday), and the novel of the book (I was looking for
it for years, found it by accident in a car boot sale and nearly
died of shock). Not to mention the video, DVD and so on.
And no, the Skeksis and the Garthim never scared me. Some things
did, but that was because I was, and am, a very weird child.
As soon as I can get my scanner working I'll post my (later) Dark
Crystal artwork.
Oh yes, and I liked Jen and Kira just as much, but Skeksil's my
favourite *Hugs*.
Skull Bearer.
Just wanted to say Hi....So Hi to everyone..(waves hand)...hows it
going.....I have enjoyed this movie for years....I chose
Kira...why....Because she has wings of course...lol...and that fuzzy
fizzgig.....with such a wide mouth...well i must be skipping off
now...nice to see you all...hope to see you again...

Yes, from what I've read, originally the Skeksis, at
least, didn't speak any english. (there are distinct
echos of this in the novelization, I believe).
However, in the test previews, audiences were left
saying "huh?" and so they changed it all to English.
I'm sure this was a necessary thing, but I've always
regretted that that happened.
> 3. Does anyone know what the box office take was for
> The Dark Crystal?
Nope. I remember reading somewhere that it did break
even, but it wasn't a major earner. Much as I love
the film, the story is a little weak, and I'm sure it
didn't appeal to many.

I don't think it left him broken. I think he was just
disappointed. At least, that's my impression from
stuff I read in the mid 80's.

There are some tidbits in the novelization. I don't
know if you'd consider it authoritative (who gets to
decide what is the official backstory?), but The World
of The Dark Crystal book contains a narrative by
Aughra about the origin of the world, the first great
conjunction etc. I figure that's as authoritative as
it gets since this was an official publication.
What details are you wanting clarification about?

Hello any Dark Crystal enthusiasts out there! Is this list active at all?
I just recently bought the Dark Crystal on DVD after many years of thinking
it was almost lost forever. This movie was my favourite as a kid aged 8,
and its vision and power is undiminished for me even over 20 years later.
In fact I think it compares to the current Lord of the Rings films in
convincingly creating another world, even though it's mostly puppets.
Some questions inevitably came up while watching the DVD (on which the only
bonus feature missing was a director's commentary!) If anyone can shed any
light, I'd be keen to hear more...
1. Why did the urRu have their name changed to the Mystics for the movie? I
presume it was a producers decision, expecting audiences would understand
the latter name better. Still, it was interesting to hear Jen speak the
original name in the work print scenes, and speak to ur-Zah at the deleted
funeral scene. Also, I noticed one of the Skeksis shrieks the name "UrRu!!"
as they come into the castle at the end. Which takes me to point two...
2. Again on those work print scenes, were the Skeksis originally intended
to be speaking a foreign language? (eg. "Haa-skeekah" = "Trial by stone"
etc) Was this another concession to potential audiences?
3. Does anyone know what the box office take was for The Dark Crystal?
4. I remember seeing a TV documentary after Jim Henson died where Frank Oz
talked about Jim's passion for DC and how the critical reaction wasn't as
enthusiastic as he had hoped. I got the impression that doing DC almost
left Henson a broken man. Can anyone shed some light?
5. I'm also keen to know if anything of a back story to the movie narrative
is available anywhere? There are some unclear things in the plot that could
do with further explanation.
Looking forward to any discussion around these points!
