Modern Family Feud: Julie Bowen vs. Sofía 'The Chola Barbie' Vergara

Each week on Modern Family, Sofía Vergara and Julie Bowen’s characters bump
heads in their unconventional stepmother-stepdaughter relationship. And in a
candid segment on Chelsea Lately last night, Julie Bowen suggested that the
discord extends off-camera, all because of another Chelsea Lately segment in
which the “Cholo Barbie” could not remember Bowen’s name. Movieline
reviews the clash, and recounts each hilarious burn by Bowen, after the jump.

It all started back on October 6, when Vergara visited Chelsea Lately to promote
Modern Family. During the interview (video below), Handler remarked on the
Colombian bombshell’s thick accent, inciting this exchange:

Vergara: You’re so jealous of my accent! You’re like Julie Roland, the girl
that works in my series.
Handler: What’s her name?
Vergara: (sheepish) Julie Roland?
Handler: No, that’s not her name. Julie Bowen is her name.
Vergera: I was tricking you. I was tricking you to see if you — Listen, I work
with her 24 hours a day, how would I not know her name?
Handler: Exactly, exactly. We would be fools to think that.

Bowen was apparently tuned into E! that night because she recalled Vergera’s
slam, and a few others, during her own Chelsea Lately segment last night.
Debuting her spot-on Vergara impression, Bowen proceeded to lay into her co-star
with material so solid that she almost upstaged the host.

Asked why Vergara could have possibly forgotten her name, Bowen retorted: “I
have never had the chance to fly Sofia private and give her jewelry, so my name
has no resonance for her.”

Egged on by Handler (“It’s a shame she’s so stupid”), Bowen recounted an
interaction the two had shortly after Bowen gave birth to twins:

“After [the birth], I had the loose flesh thing and [Vergara] was like,
‘That’s disgusting.’ And I said, ‘Well, what am I supposed to do?’ And
she said, ‘At home, they put you in a girdle right after you give birth. Your
mother and your auntie are there and they just zip you in.’ So, she thinks
I’m disgusting and can’t remember my name.”

Your move, Vergara. And you should probably rethink your rape jokes.

Sofia Vergara Makes Rape Joke on The View

Colombian-born actress Sofia Vergara gets plenty of laughs as Ed O'Neill's wife
on ABC's new hit comedy Modern Family. Yesterday on The View, though?

Well, let's just say rape jokes aren't always knee-slappers.

Trying to make light of her youthful appearance, the 37-year-old Sofia reacted
in a puzzling way when the panel was surprised that she has an 18-year-old son.

Sherri Shepherd said, as viewers saw a photo of Sofia and son Manolo: "You're a
single mom of a teenage son, who's 18?! You have him when you were 12?'

Sofia Vergara's response: "Thirteen. I was raped."

Barbara Walters in particular looked shocked as Sofia made the remark, and even
Whoopi Goldberg, who's rarely fazed, appeared surprised at the comment.

Gasps could also be heard from the studio audience.

Interestingly, Whoopi came under fire last month for saying on The View that
Roman Polanski's alleged rape of a 13-year-old in 1977 was not "rape rape."

Check out the clip of Sofia Vergara on The View yesterday. The rape joke takes
place around the four-minute mark, and it's as awkward as billed ...

(Picture)
It takes a lot to silence the women of The View. Kudos, Sofia Vergara.

5 Things to Know About Sofia Vergara

She brings laughs each week on ABC's new sitcom Modern Family – but Sofia
Vergara never intended to be a comic actress. She actually went to dental
school.

Calling from Los Angeles, Vergara, 37, opened up about how she got acquainted
with her onscreen husband Ed O'Neill, her near career as a dentist and her own
real life family.

Here are five fun facts about the Modern Family scene stealer:

1. That accent is real!
Sure, it may seem specific to her character Gloria's outsized personality but
Vergara says her accent is the real deal. "I go out to a mall or restaurant and
when somebody hears me they'll go, 'Oh my God, it's your real accent,'" she
says. "I tell them, 'Yeah, I guess I'm not that good an actress!'" Still, she
admits, her comedic instincts may, at times, cause her to emphasize certain
pronunciations. "I do make the accent a little stronger," she says. "I
understand English; I read and write English perfectly, but the accent won't go
away."

2. She was a teenage mom.
On Modern Family, Vergara's character has a young son named Manny – and in
real life, the actress has a 18-year-old son named Manolo, who's a senior in
high school. "I always tried to do the best for my kid," Vergara says. "I was 19
when I had him!" As a young mother, the actress says she's "never been alone,"
so she's not exactly thrilled that her son will be headed off to college next
year. "I joke that I want him to fail this year so he can stay home another
year," she says. "He looks at me like, 'You're a freak.' "

year," she says. "He looks at me like, 'You're a freak.' "

3. She was almost a dentist.
She's been an actress, model, television host and, yes, Vergara almost took up
dentistry in Colombia. "I had to do two more semesters [of school], she says,
adding that she quit dental school to become a TV host. Still, her dental
hygiene remains impeccable. "I'm obsessed," she says. "My son thinks I'm crazy
because I make him do a cleaning every three months. I try to bribe the dentist
to make him to do it sooner!" Sofia Vergara and Ed O'Neill

4. She watched Ed Bundy in Spanish!
On Modern Family, Vergara is married to Jay, played by Ed O'Neill – and he was
quite the familiar face. "I used to watch Married with Children in Colombia,
dubbed in Spanish," she says. "[Ed's] fantastic! Sometimes he knows even more
than the director when the scene is perfect. Ed knows a lot about TV. I didn't
have much TV acting experience so I'm learning a lot."

5. She's friends with Shakira.
Born in the same town, Barranquilla, Colombia, as Shakira, Vergara says her pal
would be a dream guest star on Modern Family – playing her sister. "I would
love for her to do a little acting," she says. Who else would she like to guest
star? Says Vergara: "I told them, 'Please can we get Sophia Loren as my
mother?'" I would love to meet her; I just think she's fantastic."

Benjamin Bratt to Guest-Star on Modern Family

Former Law & Order and The Cleaner star Benjamin Bratt will guest-star on ABC's
hit comedy, Modern Family, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fall TV: Get scoop on all the new and returning shows

Bratt will play the ex-husband of Sofia Vergara's Gloria, who is now married to
the much older Jay ( Ed O'Neill). The character has been referenced often this
season: His son, Manny, idolizes his absentee father while Gloria speaks
regularly of his physical prowess, much to Jay's chagrin.

Bratt's casting comes on the heels of the news that film actor Ed Norton will
also stop by the show. Shelley Long appears on Wednesday's episode as Jay's
eccentric ex-wife.

Bratt is currently set to appear in only one episode.

Sofia Vergara Introduces Modern Family

The sexy actress talks about her new ABC comedy and what it's like playing Ed
O'Neil's wife.

One of the fall's best new comedies, ABC's Modern Family uses the mockumentary
format to follow the lives of three different family structures. Sofia Vergara
stars in the series as Gloria, who is married to the Jay (Ed O'Neill), a man old
enough to get mistaken for her father. Jay's own children are adults, but he now
must contend with helping raise Gloria's young son (Rico Rodriguez)– and
keeping up with a wife with a lot more energy than he has.

I recently spoke to Vergara about Modern Family and what it's like playing the
wife of the former Al Bundy.

IGN: I'm guessing you never watched Married with Children and thought, "One day
I'm going to play that guy's wife!"

Vergara: No, are you kidding me? I saw that show a lot in Colombia. It was
great; it was one of our favorites. But I never, never thought "I'll play his
wife!" [Laughs]

IGN: This seems like an unlikely relationship on the surface. What do you think
it is that drew these two together?

Vergara: Well, I think she was coming out from a very difficult relationship
with the ex-husband. He wasn't responsible, he was like a playboy doing all
kinds of crazy things and not being responsible with the kid. And then to meet
this guy that is completely the opposite… I think that's why she loves him,
because he's so different. He's giving her all that she never had with the other
guy.

IGN: TV Critics can be a very tough crowd, to say the least, but it's clear most
of us love your show.

Vergara: Thank you! I'm so happy, because I've already done three [series], so
I'm hoping this one is the last one! [Laughs]

IGN: When you shot the pilot, did you feel like the cast and chemistry was all
really clicking in?

Vergara: I think you never know how it's going to be until the end when they
send you the DVD and you see the whole thing put together. For me, I knew the
script was funny, but when I saw it, I was completely surprised how the idea of
the show [came together]. Because at the beginning, I didn't understand that
well about the mockumentary, but then when I saw it, it made sense.

IGN: I was trying to get my head around your character's son and how thanks to
the marriage, he would be an uncle of sorts to Ed's character's grandkids, even
if they're older than him.

Vergara: And that makes me a grandmother, too! I don't know how they're going to
play that, but I'm sure that's part of the whole funny situation. It's going to
be different. And also that it's very real – there are families like that
nowadays. Even me, my son is 18 years old. It happens! Weird things happen.

IGN: As a mom, can you relate to how protective your character is, such as in
the soccer scene in the pilot, when she's yelling at other parents?

Vergara: Yeah, definitely. She's very Latin. I totally love the role, because
it's so easy for me to play her. She's like how most of us Latin women are. Of
course it's a comedy, so I exaggerate a little bit, but we have that essence
that she has – protective and very fiery and fun.

IGN: How is it working with Ed?

Vergara: We work great together, because we both don't like to work. [Laughs]
We're both like, "Okay, let's do it one more time and that's it."

IGN: I imagine it must be very different as an actor doing the mockumentary
interview scenes.

Vergara: Yes, but it's fun, because you get to do mistakes, and they work! It
even makes it more real. It is different. I've never done something like that.

Modern Family premieres Wednesday, September 23rd on ABC.

Shelley Long joining ABC's 'Modern Family'

Though ABC has not yet confirmed her casting, sources tell me "Cheers" alum
Shelley Long (Diane Chambers) has just signed on to portray Ed O'Neill's ex wife
in the single-camera sitcom, "Modern Family."

The series, a mockumentary of sorts following three suburban couples -- one
traditional, one gay, one multi-ethnic second marriage -- is set to premiere
this fall on ABC.

And, by the way, it's legitimately funny.

O'Neill plays the husband in the multi-ethnic second marriage, with Sofia
Vergara as his much-younger, Latina wife.

Adding Long -- as a 60-something, super white first wife -- to that dynamic?

Maybe genius.

We've got high hopes for this "Modern Family" business.

Any thoughts?

UPDATE 12:05 P.M.: ABC has confirmed Shelley Long's casting. She is set to
appear in one episode so far.

Press Tour Diary: ABC's 'Modern Family'

WHO: Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson,
Eric Stonestreet, and exec producers Steven Levitan and Jason Winer.

PREMISE: Riotously funny single-camera comedy focusing on three very different
dysfunctional families. Easily the best comedy pilot of the new fall season.
(BTW, last day of press tour! I made it!)

9:11 am: The panel begins with a question about the pilot’s big twist, which
ABC initially asked us to keep quiet about. Apparently, the gag order has now
been lifted so here it is (spoiler alert!): The three families are all related!

9:13 am: E.P. Levitan says incorporating the Office-style mockumentary element
brings “some grit” to the show and makes “it not so syrupy.”

9:15 am: A reporter asks Ferguson about his decision to do another comedy after
being in the “real awful one on Fox.” (For the record, he’s referring to
the short-lived Do Not Disturb.) The actor jokes, “What people don’t
understand is that [Disturb] was a three-part miniseries. We told our [entire]
story.” All kidding aside, Ferguson says he contemplated returning to theater
after the Disturb debacle, but changed his mind when he read the Modern Family
script.

9:20 am: Asked to compare his current and former TV spouses (Sofia Vergara’s
Gloria vs. Katey Sagal’s Peg), O’Neill says, “I’m older, she’s
younger. Peg and I were a little closer in age. This is a whole different deal.
I’m in a little over my head in this one, and it’s kind of fun to keep
up.”

9:26 am: I heart Sofia Vergara and her fabulous Colombian accent.

9:28 am: Bowen was less than a month away from giving birth when she shot the
pilot. “You might notice my character does a lot of laundry in the pilot,”
she says with a laugh. “The reality is I was hiding an enormous belly.” She
adds that playing the harried mom on TV is a lot more fun than “playing the
love interest and just sort of reacting.” (Is she talking about Lost?)

Coming up later today: ABC exec session, FlashForward, Cougar Town, and more!

EXCLUSIVE Q & A: Sofia Vergara Brings Colombian Flavor To ABC's "Modern Family"

Someone at ABC really wants to make me smile! The network that already boasts a
Honduran lead actress (America Ferrera on Ugly Betty), a Dominican star (Judy
Reyes on Scrubs), and a Mexican lead starlet (Eva Longoria-Parker in Desperate
Housewives), is adding Barranquilla, Colombia to its resume with the talented
and beautiful Sofia Vergara! Networks always refer to themselves as a family. If
that's true, then ABC’s successful attempts at diversification over the last 6
years have successfully turned them into a very modern family. It’s fitting
then that the title of Vergara’s show is, er, Modern Family. The show, which
will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. this fall, (and has been picked up for 13
episodes), is a single-camera, mockumentary style comedy (like The Office), that
takes a funny look at the lives of three very different families: one is
“traditional,” complete with a mom, dad and two kids; another is a gay
couple and their adopted Asian
baby, and the third is a sexy younger woman from Colombia (Vergara), who is
married to a much older man (played by Ed O’Neill).

The enchanting actress, who is currently touring with Broadway's Chicago and
playing the role of Mama Morton in Miami, dished exclusively to me the details
of her new, sure-to-be-a-hit show, why her son says she sounds like Tony
Montana, and why she doesn't care if America thinks she's funny.

Q:Tell me about your character on Modern Family, Gloria?
A:She’s in her late 30’s and married to a 60-year-old. She’s from Colombia
and has a kid from a previous family. She’s a lot of fun!

Q:Do you like playing a younger, sexy woman who’s involved with an older (much
less attractive) man?
A:Yeah! She’s a lot of fun! They did a great job [of making that relationship
funny] in the pilot, so I’m thinking it’s going to be a lot of fun, and very
funny. It’s a very real situation that happens nowadays.

Q:What is it like working with Ed "Al Bundy" O’Neill?
A:It is fantastic! He’s great. He was so professional and so nice. He was
helping everybody. He’s very patient.

Q:Were you ever a fan of Married with Children?
A:I watched it sometimes in Colombia when I used to live there. It was very well
known there!

Q:Your show was the first show to be picked up by ABC for the fall even before
the upfronts. Are you surprised that it got picked up so early?
A:No, I’m not surprised. I think that since the beginning they really liked
the script, and they liked the people that were doing it, and they were almost
sure (they were going to pick up the show).

Q:Comedy seems to be a major priority for ABC this year, why do you think that
is?
A:Because of what everybody is saying—that people want to be entertained
because of the troubled times, and people want to relax, not think too much, and
just have a good laugh with their family.

Q:What do you personally like about this show?
A:I think it’s different because of the very real way they setup the families.
It’s a combination of people from different parts of the world, different
sexualities. It’s very real, so that’s what I like about it

Q:I heard you say on Chelsea, Lately recently that your son Manolo (who is named
after Tony Montana’s sidekick in Scarface) says that you sound like Tony when
you talk. Is that true?
A:When he says that, he means that I have a very strong accent that I haven’t
been able to get rid of in many, many years living in the United States.

Q:That makes sense. But you don’t have a hard time acting in English and
memorizing scripts in English, right?
A:No, I don’t have any problems. I just have an accent, but that doesn’t
mean I don’t speak English!

Q:When people talk about you, they usually talk about your beauty, but when I
saw the clips of Modern Family, I was stunned not only by your beauty, but also
by your excellent comic timing. You are funny! Do you think after seeing this
show people will think and go “wow, Sofia is also a great comedic actress and
talent?”
A:Well, I really don’t care (laughs). I just hope that the show goes well,
because it’s work. And that is what I want to do—I want to work. I think the
show is going to have the opportunity to reach a big audience, and of course,
that would be good for me. But I don’t go around thinking “They’re gonna
see me like this,” or “they’re going to see me like that.” I really
don’t care (laughs).

Sofa Vergara, cartoonish 'Chicago' don't deliver show's old razzle dazzle

When the John Kander-Fred Ebb-Bob Fosse musical Chicago first hit Broadway in
1975, it lasted a respectable 936 performances. It ran a bit more than two
years, but was far overshadowed by an innovative little show titled A Chorus
Line.

Stripped down and reconceived by director Walter Bobbie as part of the Encores!
staged reading series at Manhattan's City Center in 1996, Chicago made it back
to Broadway later that year. Thirteen years later -- the revival hit 5,200
performances this week -- the show is still going strong. On Broadway, anyway.

On the road? Maybe not so much.

The touring version of Chicago, which has made numerous stops in South Florida
since 1997, has returned to play Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center for the
Performing Arts this week. On display are two of the reasons that Bobbie's
clever revival has lasted so long: minimalist production values and gimmick
casting.

To the delight of some and the dismay of others, Colombian beauty Sofa Vergara
is making her Miami stage debut in the show as prison matron ''Mama'' Morton.
Fresh from her first professional theater gig -- a four-week Broadway run as
Mama -- the gamely gorgeous Vergara belts, sways a little and reliably delivers
her lines, throwing in a ''Mami'' here and there for some sabor latino.

Casting a bombshell in a role customarily played by a heftier woman who
communicates avarice and lust for the fame-hungry murderesses she calls her
''chickies'' is a choice. And we shouldn't be surprised that a show that has
tried to boost its box office by featuring celebrity stars (think Lisa Rinna and
hubby Harry Hamlin, Melanie Griffith, Usher, George Hamilton, Samantha Harris,
Chandra Wilson) would consider bringing Vergara to Miami a no-brainer.

But the decision is also pandering, unfair to Vergara (who doesn't have the
stage experience to believably exist in the show's sly, stylish world), to the
theater-seasoned cast and anyone in the audience who might object to watching a
novice at Broadway touring show prices.

Vergara's costars deliver the goods, though the show is starting to feel a tad
tired, as though it has been on the road one or two years too long. For a
musical powered by Jazz Age fizz and and a palpable lust for fame, that's not
good.

A funny, radiant Bryn Dowling is bouncy blond Roxie Hart, a gal who's only too
happy to plug her lover Fred (Brent Heuser) and humiliate her sad-sack hubby
Amos (Ron Orbach) to get her name in the papers. Terra C. MacLeod, who played
Roxie's rival Velma when the tour hit the Broward Center three years ago, is
still bringing Fosse style -- pinioned upper arms, a jutting pelvis,
lightning-fast legs -- to the dancing that is her strong suit. And Broadway
veteran Brent Barrett makes defense attorney Billy Flynn as irresistible as he
is avaricious.

Chicago still has plenty going for it: a great Kander-Ebb score, sexy dancers,
vibrant characters, an ever-resonant story. But the too-often broad and
cartoonish production at the Arsht isn't wearing its age well.

Christine Dolen is The Miami Herald's theater critic.

ABC announces fall schedule, 'Ugly Betty' moves to Fridays

ABC will launch three new dramas and four comedies in the fall, including an
entirely new -- and risky -- lineup of shows on Wednesday.

New comedies starring Kelsey Grammer (Hank) and Patricia Heaton (The Middle)
will lead off Wednesday, followed by laughers featuring Ed O'Neill (Modern
Family) and Courteney Cox (Cougar Town) starting at 9 p.m. ET. The new drama
Eastwick -- a new take on the John Updike tome The Witches of Eastwick -- will
air in the 10 p.m. slot. "We really wanted to get back to family comedies,"
explains Stephen McPherson, ABC's entertainment president, of the 2-hour comedy
block. "We needed the next generation."

The new crime drama Forgotten airs at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays behind Dancing With
the Stars. Ugly Betty moves to Fridays at 9 p.m., behind Supernanny, and the new
Flash Forward -- a high-concept drama about the aftermath of a 2-minute blackout
-- leads off Thursdays. A reality show from Mark Burnett called Shark Tank bows
on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. (though it'll get an early launch this summer after the
10th anniversary of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire). Scrubs and the sophomore
show Better Off Ted will air on Tuesdays after Dancing With the Stars completes
its fall run in November.

Gone is In the Motherhood, The Unusuals, According to Jim, Cupid, and Samantha
Who?. "I feel really responsible for that show," concedes McPherson of the
fledging sophomore laugher. "Christina Applegate is a giant TV star. It was
really frustrating. It launched well but ran out of steam."

Midseason dramas include legal series The Deep End and V, a re-imagining of the
miniseries about the world's encounter with aliens. As for the new comedies,
Hank's about a powerful CEO-cum-family man who loses his job; The Middle is
about a blue-collar family in the midwest; Cougar Town is about a divorced mom
living with her teenager; and Modern Family focuses on several crazy clans.

Shark Tank gives would-be entrepreneurs a chance to turn their inventions into
reality.

ABC's fall primetime schedule:

MONDAY

8:00 p.m. Dancing With the Stars
10:00 p.m. Castle

TUESDAY

8:00 p.m. Shark Tank
9:00 p.m. Dancing With the Stars the Results Show

8:30 p.m. The Middle
9:00 p.m. Modern Family
9:30 p.m. Cougar Town
10:00 p.m. Eastwick

THURSDAY

8:00 p.m. Flash Forward
9:00 p.m. Grey's Anatomy
10:00 p.m. Private Practice

FRIDAY:

The Bachelor will air Monday nights from 8:00-10:00 p.m. following the run of
Dancing With the Stars, and Scrubs and Better Off Ted will air at 9:00 p.m. and
9:30 p.m., respectively, following the run of Dancing with the Stars The Results
Show.

The Broadway company of CHICAGO continues to "Razzle Dazzle" with new offerings

post-show discussion and audience Q&A session with members of the Broadway
company of the record-breaking hit musical.

Designed to provide theatergoers with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes glimpse
into the world of CHICAGO, the latest "Talkback Tuesdays" celebrated "Cinco de

Most recently, Vergara appeared on the big screen in Tyler Perry's Meet the

breakout hit "Dirty Sexy Money," where she played the free-spirited love
interest to the youngest Darling son. Before that, she played the sexy Columbian
actress who stirred things up on last season's "Entourage" on HBO. In 2008
Vergara starred as Alicia in "Amasde Casa Desesperadas" the Latin-tailored
version of the television megahit "Desperate Housewives." She also starred in
the FOX comedy feature Chasing Papi.

Earlier this month, Vergara began work on the new ABC-TV series "An American
Family."

In 2002, Vergara was awarded the Women of Hope Award by the City of Hope
Organization as one of the outstanding role models for future generations. In
2007, Sofia was named one of The 25 Most Powerful Hispanic Women in the
Entertainment Industry by The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard.

Now celebrating twelve glorious years of girls, glitz and glamour on the Great
White Way, the record-breaking smash hit musical CHICAGO is currently the
