Here is an article I read today on the internet. It reminded me of a story by
Philip K Dick called "Frozen Journey" (Playboy Dec 1980), about a space
traveller whose suspended animation equipment malfunctions and he has to remain
conscious for the entire voyage..............It made me think when I read it
then........and it makes me think now.....what a writer he was.......this is a
nightmarish thought !!!!!

Ian

A man injured in a car crash lay paralysed in a hospital bed for 23 years
diagnosed as being in a coma, but was conscious of his ordeal the whole time.

Rom Houben was paralysed as a result of his accident and had no way of alerting
doctors that he was aware of his surroundings and able to hear every word they
were saying.

Doctors in Zolder in Belgium carried out a number of tests on Houben, and
decided that his consciousness was 'extinct' and he was in a persistent
vegetative state.

On every occasion, he was diagnosed incorrectly and Mr Houben was left to suffer
in silence for over two decades.

Now 46, Houben said 'I dreamed myself away,' adding that 'I screamed, but there
was nothing to hear'.

'I became a witness to my own suffering as doctors and nurses tried to speak
with me until they gave up all hope.'

The arrival of new high-tech scanners found that Houben's brain was functioning
normally, and therapy has since allowed him to tap out messages on a computer
screen and to read books whilst lying down.

'I shall never forget the day when they discovered what was truly wrong with me
– it was my second birth,' said Houben, 'All that time I just literally dreamed
of a better life. Frustration is too small a word to describe what I felt'.

Mr Houben's case has re-ignited controversy over whether those in a persistent
vegetative state should be allowed to die.

Houben is now recovering in a specialist unit near Brussels.

Plans for the world's largest sauna

The world’s largest sauna is being built in Haparanda, in northern Sweden.
Developers of the hotel-spa complex hope to attract more tourists to the area.
Haparanda shares a border with Tornio, in Finnish Lapland.

Work on the hotel began on Wednesday. The entire complex is expected to be
finished by next June.

”There are already many interesting attractions in this area. We have an Ikea
store, which draws two million visitors a year. We also have a large shopping
centre. But those attractions are for day visits. Now we hope to entice people
here for the whole weekend,” says Kristiina Lampinen, the director of the hotel.

She adds that developers plan to market the hotel-spa complex globally. However,
they will initially try to appeal to tourists in Sweden and Finland. Lampinen
says she believes visitors from further away will be interested as well.

”We have something that can’t be found just anywhere. Of course, we have the
nature here with the midnight sun in the summer and then the charm of our
winters.”

The five million euro investment is expected to create about 50 jobs in the
area.

Smallville will be presenting an ode to the Golden Age of comics with what
they're calling a 2 hour movie event. It's current title is Absolute Justice.
Indications are this story will expand the scope of the show with the
introduction of a multigenerational factor. Initially the series was to be the
history of the growth and developement of Superman. As the show progressed, they
added the existant of the superhuman community. Later they layed the ground work
for future story elements such as the Justice League. Absolute Justice grew out
of a 2 episode story arc originally called Society and Legends. As is
traditional with the genre, one generation passing the torch to the next is a
pivotal point. Hopes are running high that this story will be worthy of the
material's 69 year history. The trailer for the episode has been posted on You
Tube and linked on News Arama.

http://www.newsarama.com/tv/091121-Smallville-Absolute-Justice.html

Speculation

It appears they are using the ominous threat leading to discovering a well kept
secret story element. Descendents and survivors of the legendary Justice Society
of America come together to face the threat. Eventually they are forced to join
with a new generation of heroes. Introductions and a flash back history ensues
reminisent of production sequenques used in the Birds of Prey series. Press
releases have indicated that Dr Fate, Stargirl, and a 90's style Hawkman will be
main characters. The trailer brings glimses of a golden age Green Lantern's
ring, the Sandman, and a golden age Dr Fate to the tail. Added to that a portait
of the current original JSA roster and you see the possibility of character
waxing very poetic about their pasts.

Personally I'm having mixed feelling on this production. The golden age heroes
have always been a favorite of mine. Their stories were more fantastical then
the later incarnations, but heroes in stories should be larger then life. You
explain away everything and make them too human, and they loose their
inspirational value. So they have problems paying the rent or get dumped by
their steady lets you relate. Having 6 kids and not paying child support to any
of their mothers, or skimming off recovered stolen money to fund your cocaine
habit, just doesn't seem heroic. Putting the old in a supositely modern context
is not always the best context.

I think you're right, Spongebob is the "innocent", just like Mr Crab is
the conniving, worldly-wise one, and Squidward is the would-be
intellectual. Sandy's role, because she's from the outside, and because
she's the one who exhibits some common sense (well, sometimes...), is
interesting. All the characters are snapshots of mental/emotional
states, which is what makes the show so good, and gives it the depth
that a lot of adults can see.

Watching Spongebob with my 10 year old, he has often looked at me with pity as I
weep, helpless with laughter. This works, as does Fairly, on so many levels that
I feel sorry for the adults who miss out on this stuff as they're completely

will hiccup a few times, in an effort to control my mirth long enough to give my
take on the story. Beats the c__p out of Disney (although I love Wall-e to bits)

To my shame, I've never looked at the names of the Sponge/Fairly script/story
writers, but they are heros.

Just got my copy. £8.00 from Morrisons! I've yet to find it cheaper anywhere
else.

Damn, but it's a good movie, having watched it again. Roll on the next
instalment.

Ooh I lvoe Fairly Oddparents

A lot of the gags in that are not really for kids if you listen closely
to them.... That's why this show rocks for grown ups too.

Gotta love little Timmy.

And even The Doctor used a clip of this show to antoganise the Sontarans
so it has "universal appeal" lol

Disney is so caught up in their disney formula that most of their movies aren't
worth watching. Nickelodeon has good stuff like Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents
that parents can watch with their children. The Forever War (and virtually
anything by Joe Haldeman) have always been among my favorite books.

Weez has borrows Dug deh Doggie's translation collar furr dis postie:

I was born in Glendale in 1952. Moved to the SF Valley soon after, where I lived
until 2001 when I moved to Virginia. Lived through the big Earthquakes of 1971
and 1994 (lost my home in that one)... Used to love the wonderful beaches and
weather, did a lot of Scuba diving off Catalina Island. Loved being close to the
High Sierra's (nothing like that here, biggest mountain in VA has an elevation
of only 5,000 feet)... Loved the Mojave Desert (visited a Star Trek set at
Vasquez Rocks where they filmed "Arena")... My entire family still lives there,
which is why I'm making a visit soon. Parents are getting old and not in good
health, and it'll be fun to see my brother, sister, nieces and nephews...

L.A. has gotten so crowded and the smog keeps the sky a dirty brown. There are
gangs and gunshots in almost every neighborhood at night. Traffic is horrendous.
I made the move to VA because at that time in my life, I really needed a change
from my previous life. I remember when the 405 Freeway was being built, and when
Sepulveda Blvd. was the only road from the Valley to Downtown.

Now, I get snow in the winter, blue skies all the time with fresh clean air, and
wide open spaces... and yes, there are crack dealers even in the small town of
Winchester where I live... but I left L.A. to start a new life after a few too
many personal events all happened at once... Do I regret moving? Sometimes...
and I may at some time even move again when a certain job opens in St. Louis (I
was offered a job as Co-Curator of the Museum of Pulp History when it finally
opens)...

Yes, I've slinked through alleyways at times in the past, but have also seen the
beauty of the city... and if I were a crack-head, sure I could tell you exactly
where to find it... but I'm a good kitty now!

Keep your eyes posted... You never know.

BTW Is it an abusive relationship Bella is in? I'm confused. Not that I
care or anything but some people on the internet claim that the
relationship is one sided.

You could always finance it by selling the footage to one of those reality clip
programs. Whose know, Robot Chiocken may offer you a job.

Well, I'm 52, and I'm finding that my appetite for surrealist,
ridiculous, smart, out-there SF and fantasy is getting stronger if
anything. I think it's because as I get older, I realise with more and
more certainty that the mainstream news and business shows, and
especially the 'reality' rubbish, is just that -- rubbish. The stuff my
kids watch makes my jaw drop on account of its mind-numbing stupidity.
The people behind the Disney channel should be charged with some crime
against the human intellect. Give me the product of a healthy and
inquisitive imagination, any day. I've just finished listening to the
audiobook version of Joe Haldemann's "Forever War". Great stuff. I don't
care how old it is, or how old I am.
