Actor/Director Dialogue – How to Discern Someone’s Style of Speaking by Sean
Pratt

Understanding the director’s speaking style, as well as your own, will go a
long way to helping you effectively communicate with each other.

Perhaps this has happened to you. You’ve just finished performing your scene
and have gone to the director to get your notes. She says, “Wonderful.
Let’s do it again but this time infuse the scene with the color blue.” And
you’re thinking to yourself, “Is the director crazy? What does that
mean?!” Nothing can be more problematic to the success of a project than when
the director cannot clearly communicate with an actor and vice versa.
Essentially, it boils down to the way each of them speaks and listens. And when
it comes to talking, while you can’t change the director’s way of conveying
her/his ideas to you, you can endeavor to understand what kind of style it is
and adjust your responses accordingly.

I'm now scouting for a neighborhood that has Spanish-style homes - stucco, clay-tiled roofs, etc.

Some neighborhoods we've investigated already are Gables-Merrick, Atlantic Beach & Long Beach.

Do you know of any other towns that might have whole streets of these homes? Here's a link to some of the homes/towns we've shot already. Click on "Mildred Pierce", then "Residential":

Riveting! A story of moral courage that changed the world.- New York Magazine  Detailed, clearly told, persuasive.- The New York Times

Daniel Ellsberg risked his career and imprisonment to bring truth to the American people. In 1971, as a high-level Pentagon official and Vietnam War strategist, Ellsberg concludes that the war is based on decades of lies and leaked 7000 pages of top secret documents to The New York Times, making headlines around the world. This is a riveting story of how one mans profound change of heart created a landmark struggle involving Americas newspapers, its president and Supreme Court. I'm probably breaking some sort of protocol here but Thanksgiving is next week and this is an EMERGENCY.

In case you haven't heard:

On Sunday night the headquarters of Hope for The Furure minsitries in Farmingdale LI was was destroyed by fire. This included the kitchen, the food storage warehouse, offices and the refrigerated van. Police say the fire appeared to be intentionally set.  Hope 4 The Future is a lifeline to the many poor and homeless on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and the streets of Long Island,  supplying nutritious hot meals, pantry bags and even a church where people can be accepted.

If you can help out in any way so that these people (our fellow New Yorkers) can have a Thanksgiving meal next week, please donate whatever you can afford.  The link to their website is: http://www.hopeforthefuture.com/

Thank you and have a "HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE."

Actor’s Advertising Campaigns – When to Stay in Touch and When to Bang Your
Drum by Sean Pratt

In order to help advance their careers, actors must learn how to use the two
basic methods of publicity.

In the world of marketing, there are two distinct kinds of advertising campaigns
– an “Ongoing Campaign” and a “Promotional Campaign.” These two kinds
of campaigns work hand in hand to create a sense of recognition and momentum for
a business (or an actor) which, in turn, can create opportunities for them to
succeed. But knowing each one’s form and function is crucial to getting the
results you want.

TIX: http://www.tribecacinemas.com/more-info/Alwan-MIAAC_Screening_Program.html

4PM: HOW WE CELEBRATE FREEDOM (Jashn-e-Azadi)
Written and Directed by Sanjay Kak.
India, 2007, 138 min. In English, Kashmiri and Urdu, with English subtitles. NY Premiere. Sanjay Kak in person, in conversation with Mira Kamdar.

Synopsis: It is India's Independence Day and the Indian flag is raised every year in an eerily empty Lal Chowk in the heart of Srinagar, Kashmir. This sullen act of protest is the point from which Sanjay Kak, a Kashmiri Pundit by birth, begins to explore in his documentary film, the many meanings of Freedom–of Azadi–in Kashmir. An ageing father in the Martyrs' Graveyard; the Out Patients Ward of the Psychiatric Hospital; the satirical farce of Bhand folk performers; the words of Kashmiri poets – fill out the contours of the 18 year old conflict where there are no easy answers to burning questions.

7PM: SIKANDAR
Written and Directed by Piyush Jha.
India, 2009, 107 min. In Hindi, with English subtitles. Festival Premiere. Sanjay Suri in person.

Synopsis: Sikandar leads a simple life, living with his aunt and uncle, playing soccer, getting to know Nasreen, the new girl in town, and dealing with a trio of bullies.  But, when he finds a gun, the small dramas of his life become entangled with the larger conflicts of the country. Sikandar's innocent life soon spirals downward as he becomes embroiled in a power struggle between militant groups. With Parzan Dastur, Ayesha Kapoor, Madhavan, Sanjay Suri, Arunoday Singh. Sanjay Suri in person.

Preceded by: WITNESS. Children and the Kashmir conflict. Directed by Maya Mirchandani. India, 2001, 20 min. US Premiere.

Hi

As the Fall semester begins to wind down, Parallel Lines is still looking for a few cutting-edge docs or independent films  to add to our Documentary & Film Library at www.ForwardInTime.com

This Fall we added 9 new titles and are expecting to add 8-10 titles for the Spring semester.  4 years ago, we started with 4 documentaries I produced myself, and we now have approximately 225 titles in 22 educational categories. To date we have sold our documentary and independent film titles to more than 900 schools and libraries in the US, Canada, Australia & NZ.

What we believe sets us apart from more traditional documentary distributors is:
(1) We offer our producers a 40% royalty whic h is double what the vast majority of distributors offer.
(2) We do not force producers to sign a 2-3 year exclusive agreement. We are only interested in selling programs to specific markets and allow producers to opt out in 45 days if they are unhappy with the our marketing efforts.
(3) Producers have t he option to supply the DVDs for sale or to have us handle the duplication and printing for them.

If any producers have documentaries or independent films that can help promote discussion or raise awareness in college classrooms, you can check out the related categories on our web site and send us a DVD screener to review.

Thank you.

HBO is doing a mini series with Kate Winslet called, Mildred Pierce.

They're looking for a 1930's Hollywood restaurant like Laguna Beach.  THIS MUST BE IN THE ZONE (NASSAU COUNTY).  Contact me if you'd like me to send reference photos.

If you know of a place like this on the water (preferable empty), please let me know asap at debfilm@aol.com.

Thank you!

Best regards,

Debbie

I'm working on an HBO mini-series based on the novel "Mildred Pierce". Todd Haynes will be directing and Kate Winslet stars. It is scheduled to start shooting in the Spring of 2010.

Below are photos of the Laguna Beach Restaurant we are trying to match. I was hoping maybe you might be able to give me some pointers as to friendly towns, similar atmosphere, etc...
