"The priest won. He lured the demon out of the girl and into himself; then battles the demon's attempt to strangle the girl (using Karras's body to do it) and throws himself out the window before any harm can come to Regan. Mortal death is not a defeat; only death of the spirit is a true loss."
(William Peter Blatty)
The Exorcist. It turns out to be his favourite film. "Of course, the special effects are exaggerated. but it is a good film, and substantially exact, based on a respectable novel which mirrored a true story."…Father Amorth recommends it. "People need to know what we do."
"I'm very grateful to 'The Exorcist', because they made known what we do."
(Fr. Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of Rome)
"There is no difference between white magic and black magic.
When magic works, it is always the work of the demon. Every form of occultism, like this widespread resort to the religions of the East with their esoteric suggestions, are open gateways to the demon. And the devil enters. At once." (Fr. Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of Rome)
The purpose of this list is to discuss the Exorcist movies and books, as well as the theology behind them. Very few people seem to realize that William Peter Blatty's book was intended to be an exercise in the Catholic faith, not simply an entertaining horror story. This list also involves discussions on the topics of demonology and ghosts, other paranormal subjects and Exorcists such as Father Malachi Martin and Father Gabriele Amorth.
