Given the poll numbers and how the Democrats just voted in the Senate, is it too
late?

"Our 16th president knew that as well. Passing through my home state of Indiana,
Abraham Lincoln stopped at the Clay Pool Hotel on 11 February 1861. Headed to
Washington to assume the presidency, he said words that are now chiseled in a
modest bronze plaque, and I quote: "I appeal to you, to constantly bear in mind
that it is not with politicians, it is not with presidents, it is not with
office seekers, but with you is the question: Shall the union and shall the
liberties of the country be preserved?" Lincoln went on to say, "It is your
business if the union of these states and the liberties of this people shall be
lost, and it is your business to rise up."

Let us see if the Democrats pass this health care monster.

by Ramon del Rosario Jr.
from Philippine Daily Inquirer

WHEN ASKED if I have made my choice for 2010, I answer without hesitation that I certainly have, and of course it is Noynoy Aquino. Most seem to agree with me, and do not question my preference.

At a social gathering a few weeks ago, I was rather surprised when a good friend openly told the group that he was not convinced that Noynoy was the right choice. “What, you are not for Noynoy!” asked one in the group. “Who are you for?” My …

NEW YORK — HBO Sports reported here Friday that Manny Pacquiao’s 12th round TKO of Miguel Cotto was the top-drawing pay-per-view bout of 2009 with 1.25 million purchases worth 70 million dollars in revenue.

With his guaranteed purse of 13 million dollars from the bout and his shares from pay-per-view, Pacquiao stands to make about 22 million dollars in all.

At 47.100 pesos to the dollar at Friday’s close of trading, that is a whooping one billion, 36 million, 200 thousand …

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) The opposition party Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL), led by Ilocos Norte Representative (2nd District) Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. sealed an alliance with the Nacionalista Party (NP) Friday.

Similar to a traditional wedding in the north, Marcos, only son of the late president Ferdinand Marcos, gave NP standard-bearer Senator Manuel Villar a salakot, a native headwear, after the formal signing of the agreement forging the alliance at the NP headquarters in Laurel House in Mandaluyong City.

In a brief speech, Marcos, who is seeking a senatorial …

by Solita Collas-Monsod
from Philippine Daily Inquirer

I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH FURTHER THE Philippines has to sink before Filipinos of goodwill realize that we’ve got to plug the holes in the ship and start rowing like mad for terra firma. Or sink with it unless, of course, we act like rats and abandon ship. We are renowned for our patience, but doing nothing about the situation is not an option.

We are witness to a Supreme Court where eight justices—a majority (who are nameless, unfortunately)—have listed Agnes Devanadera as worthy to become …

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s victory over Miguel Cotto for the world welterweight title made him a national hero and an international sensation. And “Pacman Mania” struck Pinoys worldwide. Pacman! Pacman! Pacman!

During an interview with Pacman, American actor and TV talk show host Mario Lopez told him that he is the greatest Asian to invade the west since Genghis Khan. Pacman grinned.
Lopez then asked Pacman whom would he like to play Pacman in a movie. “Filipino or American?” asked Pacman. Lopez replied, “Either one.” Pacman paused and then said, …

After spending billions, state remains hampered by outmoded, unreliable computer
systems

An embarrassing legacy of cost overruns, botched upgrades and failed networking
projects has left California to rely on decades-old technology and jury-rigged
software systems.

By Patrick McGreevy
November 22, 2009

Reporting from Sacramento - California may be known as the cradle of computer
innovation, but several state agencies can't get their computers to perform
essential functions despite hundreds of millions of dollars in cost overruns for
repair and upgrade work.

Although taxpayer money has been flowing to corporate consultants and software
overhauls, some computer systems are on the verge of collapse, and some
replacement projects are years behind schedule or have been scrapped because
they didn't work.

The antiquated systems have even been cited by top finance officials as a
contributing factor in the difficulty the state has managing its money. A lack
of shared databases results in a sluggish information flow that can hamper
financial decision-making. Budget officials may have trouble obtaining accurate,
up-to-date numbers, and the information lag can hinder purchasing and investment

I just published my latest blog post, "Noynoy must offer his slate of candidates" in my blog, http://nykos2.blogspot.com.  It may be the last post in my blog for at least two months because I am in the process of writing a book.  No, it will not be the autobiographical magnus opus that has sat in my head for the longest time.  That must wait.  Instead, I'm contributing to a three-book volume by three members of the EPIC25 yahoogroup, who each have ideas on how to tigerize the Philippines by the year 2040 - latest.

Since the economic, political and social development book that I will contribute will be only one of three and not a stand-alone offering, it is my hope that whatever my book lacks will be compensated for by the contributions of the other two and what those two books lack will be filled in by my own ideas.

Be sure to contact your bank for use of your ATM or CC before arriving, They
will ask about the areas you will be in so when they see activity they will not
become suspicious and lock the card. I am traveling for a diving trip in Jan and
I have notified Wells Fargo of this and they have it marked in my file.

I have never seen nor heard of an international airport or a bank outside of the currencies country give a good exchange rate. On the other hand, exchanging $100 at P2 below where it should be is only a P200 loss.

Any airport with an international airport will have a currency exchange in the airport. Check them first or even your local bank should be able to change money if you give them some notice. By the way, I've never noticed any horrible exchange rates at the Manila airports but I've never been to Cebu. Certainly the exchange rates would be the same since they are operated by banks, not just money changers. another alternative would be to notify your bank you will be using your ATM abroad & just stick it in an ATM machine in the airport when you arrive. They dispense pesos.

I think Doug is thinking of the Visa where you have to pay a one time fee of approximately $1,400.00 USD and then you must have $10,000.00 deposited in the Philippines. Then you can come and go as you please, but the people on here are discussing the Visa where you are married to a filippina.

I had to wait about an hour or so until Manila called with the dollar cost converted to pesos. That's right, the fees will be different depending on the exchange rate on the day you go to get it. Crazy, huh? Anyway, what others are saying here is right. I just got my temp and it was a little over p9K including pictures, power of attorney stamps, and various copies. I went in with more copies than I needed of my own stuff and then I had to get copies of other stuff later.

Robert,

She sounds immature and manipulative to me. You are well rid of such a person.
Her threats are completely empty.

There are so many really attractive and decent young women in the Philippines.
Keep looking, Robert. You'll find the right one if you keep at it.

I think Doug is thinking of the Visa where you have to pay a one time fee of
approximately $1,400.00 USD and then you must have $10,000.00 deposited in the
Philippines. Then you can come and go as you please, but the people on here are
discussing the Visa where you are married to a filippina.

Not quite the same and they don't view it the same. I'm not saying a lot of it
isn't monetary a lot of the time because it is, but it's a different culture.
Stability is extremely important to a Filipina. Young foreign men are perceived
as high risk. They generally go to the Philippines on fox hunts and the overall
impression of the behavior is one of a guy who hasn't sowed his wild oats yet.
Then into the 30's it's figured that if he hasn't been married yet there is a
problem there (not true but that's what a lot of them have told me they think)
and his kids, if he has them are still young and the ex-wife's a factor. So it's
generally held that mid-40's is the beginning of prime. He's done is "20" with
the American woman and ready to settle down with someone who treats him right.
