I watched Operation Daybreak yesterday, and loved it. After Ivanhoe, it is
my second favorite Anthony movie so far. The very young Anthony didn¡¯t only
look great in it; he steals every scene, even though he is not the main
character. He has a way of transferring himself effortlessly into the
character, very naturally becoming part of the scene, but never overacts.
And the movie it self is great too. Heroic and powerful. Very glad to see
Anthony in it.

Oh Absolutely, Annie!

I can't wait to watch my copy, the only version of this movie I have seen so
far was on a bad VHS tape rented from the library. I was in town the other
day and I noticed where they had the stacks of Ivanhoe DVDs there were only
two left on the shelf, so apparently Anthony's gorgeousness is attracting
people to buy or there are many more fans of his in the area <very big
grin>!

Here's the exciting part!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be running an auction this year for the signed photos I got from Anthony.
The way it will work is that I will post the pictures in the Photos section.
Each photo will have a unique number attached to it for bidding purposes. Take a
look at the photo and decide how much you want to "bid" for it. (In other words,
how much of a donation you would be willing to give to the Red Cross for it.)
Email your bid to my personal address (roglerr@...) along with the number of
the photo you are bidding on. In some cases there are more than 1 photo of each
so I will take the highest bids. I will update the board and let everyone know
the highest bid for each photo. If you have been outbid and you want to bid more
to get a certain photo, just email me again with your new bid. I will post a
deadline for the auction. Once the deadline is reached, I will see who sent in
the highest bid and they will get the photo as soon as I get their Red Cross
receipt saying they donated that amount of money. The auction will start today
and end December 19th.

Each photo will start at £5 pounds. You can bid on as many photos as you like.
You can also make a donation to the Red Cross without bidding on any photos.

The photos are in the Photos section in a folder called "Red Cross Auctions
2009". Here are the names of the photos along with how many photos there are of
each:
#AA1 – 2 photos
#AA2 – 3 photos
#AA3 – 3 photos
#AA4 – 3 photos
#AA5 – 2 photos
#AA6 – 7 photos

If anyone has any questions at all, please feel free to write them on the board
or email me personally. I'd be happy to help.

As we did in previous years, we will be donating to the British Red Cross again
this year and making our donations our birthday present to Anthony. You can
donate as little or as much as you want for a very worthwhile cause close to
Anthony's heart. There are three ways to donate (for those of you who donated
last year, it's the same process as before):

- Online: debit/credit card donations can be made via their website at
www.redcross.org.uk
- By telephone: debit/credit card donations can be made by calling our Supporter
Care Line at +44 870 170 7999.
- Postal donations should be accompanied by a brief note with reference number
and made payable to the British Red Cross. The appeals address is:
British Red Cross
UK Office
44 Moorfields
London
EC2Y 9AL

For web site donations follow these instructions:
Go to the Red Cross web site donation page. You can get there by accessing this
link:

Once there, choose the amount you would like to donate, fill in your
information, and send the donation to them with your credit card. Choose
"General Fund Appeal" when making the donation. In the reference number box,
please put 2841284, and in the comments section you can say something like "in
the name of Anthony Andrews" although that is not absolutely necessary.

It is a secure web site but if for some reason you feel uncomfortable sending
your credit card information through the web site, then you can print out a form
from the site (where it says downloads), fill in the information and mail it to
them with your credit card number or call them and make your donation by phone.

For all non-UK donators, a credit card really is the best way to send the money.
Otherwise, the Red Cross gets charged huge bank fees to convert your foreign
currency to British pounds. If however, you can only send a check to them in
foreign currency, please make it a large enough donation to make it worth their
while to exchange it at the bank.

IMPORTANT: Once you have made your donation, please forward your "donation
receipt" from the Red Cross to my personal email address <roglerr@...> with
your name, address, and amount so I can be sure all the money that is donated
gets properly attributed to the Anthony Andrews account. All donations will
remain private.

This is what we raised in previous years:
2008 £1250 British pounds
2007 £1063 British pounds
2006 £1532 British pounds
2005 £1338 British pounds

Let's see if we can equal or better these totals. Anthony signed a lot pictures
for us so let's make him proud! I'll discuss the auction in a separate posting,
but please, if you have any questions, just ask me! :)

Thank you all,

Patricia

I'm so glad you got to see Operation Daybreak. I love that movie! It is one of
my favorite Anthony films, but I don't feel like it got the recognition it
deserved. An amazing true story as well! Glad you liked it. :)

Now I have to ask, have you seen Brideshead yet?

DVD is the first Anthony movie I have owned, it absolutely lovely. The movie is
great, the DVD quality is very good too. I hope it will help more people to know

It's a soapy romance to be sure, but the leading man role could totally be
played by Anthony. Even now. The leads talk about not being as young as they
once were. Yes, Anthony looks great for his age :) but we all know he's not 30

Hi, Janice,
Yes, I saw it quite a while back on television and decided to record it, but as
I say it was past the very first part.  I really enjoy Katherine Hepburn
and loved her pretending to be a silly young thing to get back at the Captain
for thinking she looked old and tired when he came back from war.  It is a cute
movie!  AA is always so good with a humorous part, but actually this hero was
not as fun a part as the heroine in my opinion.
It always takes me a long time to read my emails these days - can't do it at
work anymore even if we are not busy.  Which makes sense.

well.)  :)

Hi all,

I just wanted you all to know that I will be doing fundraising again this year
in honor of Anthony's birthday. I am a bit behind this year as I have been so
incredibly busy, but I will have details to you all in a week or two. I figure
we will raise the money for his birthday again this year as that seems to work
out well for everyone (and it gives us a little more time).

More to come on this...

Patricia

Hi Annie,

I'm glad you got to see that version. It is my favorite. And what a nice
surprise that you & your mother had seen it before a long time ago!

Anthony, but isn't it something that it was one of the first few western movies
were introduced to China after the Iron Curtain was lift in the 1980s, and
Anthony was in it.

he plays Steerforth. He is absolutely brilliant (and gorgeous) in it. So if you
have not seen that version, I highly recommend it.

a nice adaptation of the great literature work, and I loved seeing Anthony in
it, even as the bad guy. He did a great job playing the evil step-father. I was
amazed at how young he looks like in that movie. The movie was made in 2002 I
think, so Anthony must have been 54 at that time. However, in many scenes, he
just looks like someone in their mid-thirties. I have never seen any man in
their fifties so youthful looking.

So, Sandra, you saw the movie--with Katharine Hepburn and Franchot Tone? If
they are in it--and Katharine Hepburn impersonates her "niece" in the plot--this
is the movie I am talking about. My sister and I totally see Anthony in the
Franchot Tone role. I think the character was "Captain Brown", but I confess to
not having watched it for some time so I'm not 100% certain.

Hi, all,
You know I do have Quality Street recorded from television. I missed the
first part, but was sure it was called Quality Street. It is a fun movie, and
of course AA would be great in any part. One of the disappointments in
life is that My Fair Lady with him as Higgins couldn't be here in the US
sometime.
One of my favorite characters and my favorite actor!

Take care,
Sandy

Hi Patricia

I hope you DO get to see "Quality Street" someday. I'd be verrrrrrrrry surprised
if anyone has it available for rental, though. As I said, it's obscure. Don't
know why it's obscure, though. It's a ton of fun!

Hi Janice,

Now you've really got me wanting to see that movie. Hmmm...I wonder if
Blockbuster would have it? Probably not I bet. Well, if I ever see the movie,
I'll let you know.

*Sigh* I've seen the trailer on Youtube and felt guilty just for seeing that.
Not impressed.

I've seen it twice. (Don't ask; I live in a small country town. These things
happen when you're desperate for entertainment).

The first time I thought it was just terrrible -- couldn't help making
comparisons to the original. The second time, I thought it had some merit, some
good performances.

But -- it's annoying where it borrows from the original and annoying again when
it doesn't (like when Julia accompanies C&S to Venice). The Sebastian figure is
awful -- more like a pimp from a redlight district than a member of a dying
aristocracy. But then, I would have hated it if he'd tried to imitate AA's
performance. So this film was never going to please me -- what can I say?
