This week at the movies, we've got a global catastrophe (2012, starring John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor) and some rock 'n' roll rebellion (Pirate Radio, starring Philip S. Hoffman and Bill Nighy). What do the critics have to say?
With his starring turn in Roland Emmerich's latest big-budget disaster epic, 2012, arriving in theaters this weekend, could there be a better time to look at Mr. Cusack's collected works?
Casino Royale (2006) 80% Martin Campbell reworks the Bond formula to a more character driven film, while still retaining the twists and turns of previous entries... More...

This week at the movies, we've got some modern-day Dickens (Disney's A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman); a button-pushing thriller (The Box, starring Cameron Diaz and James Marsden); vanishing Alaskans (The Fourth Kind, starring Milla Jovovich and Elias Koteas); and some psychic soldiers (The Men Who Stare at Goats, starring George Clooney and Jeff Bridges). What do the critics have to say?
Though its underlying themes are familiar, The House of the Devil effectively sheds the loud and gory cliches of contemporary horror to deliver a tense, slowly building throwback to the fright flicks of decades past.
An eye-opening expose of the modern food industry, Food, Inc. is both fascinating and terrifying, and essential viewing for any health-conscious citizen.

7pm: AMITYVILLE 3-D (1983) I love 3D movies. Last year we installed digital 3D technology in this place that gives incredibly clean, clear, crisp 3D. This system uses wireless shutter glass that were developed through technology created by Lenny Lipton who used the royalties from his hit song, PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON, to explore the world of 3D film making. What it does away with is the ghosting created by conventional anaglyph (red and blue) 3D. This is 3D as I always imagined it could be.
Since last summer I have acquired digital 3D copies of nearly every 3D movie ever made going right back to the Lumiere Brothers' 1903 film, TRAIN ARRIVING AT A STATION. I created the Cineforum as a resource center modelled after the idea behind Toronto's Rochdale College (where I served as Director Of Cinema Studies). In his book, 3-D MOVIES A History And Filmography Of Steroscopic Cinema R. M. Hayes writes of tonight's film, "Certainly the best of the Amityville series and considerably more frightening than the other three. The photography made good use of stereo-effects into the theatre space with excellent staging for the widescreen 3-D system...The stereo sound was excellent and added greatly to the overall effect of the story. Casting, art direction, etc., was top level."
So come on by, scare yourself silly in 3-D and then go out and party.
9pm: HAXAN (WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES) (1922) Sweden. Directed by Benjamin Christensen. This silent Swedish docu-drama is unflinching in its portrayal of the wildest excesses of Satanic obsession in the middle ages. Its scenes of Black Masses are the most graphic ever put on film. For this special presentation I have created acore from the music of THE DEAD CAN DANCE.

This week at the movies brings only one wide release: the hotly-anticipated performance documentary Michael Jackson's This Is It, which captures the King of Pop in rehearsals for what was to be a comeback tour. What do the critics have to say?
With Halloween right around the corner, we at RT thought it was high time to
pay tribute to those legions of the undead that have won the critics' approval, from Dracula to Twilight.
While it may not be the definitive concert film (or the insightful backstage look) some will hope for, Michael Jackson's This Is It packs more than enough entertainment value to live up to its ambitious title.
This week at the movies, we've got an anime hero (Astro Boy, with voice work from Kristen Bell and Nicolas Cage); a vampire war ( Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, starring Chris Massoglia and John C. Reilly); an aviation pioneer (Amelia, starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere); and gore galore (Saw VI, starring Costas
Mandylor and Mark Rolston). What do the critics have to say?
Though the latter part of the film may not appeal to all, An Education is a charming coming-of-age tale powered by the strength of relative newcomer Carey Mulligan's standout performance.

I also know that no less than uber-director John Woo and Wes Craven (who got the idea for House on the Left, from VS) also dug this Ingmar classic Ingmar Bergman movie. re-FRANKENPIMP:The Little Youtube Movie that grew...
-Growing up sucks! I had an older male cousin that was a mentor..he was a charismatic fellow , from an affluent family, on my Father's side... we grew apart, as most hero's usually do. He was still an influence..as a new immigrant to North America..my family had to start all over again, in the New World. I had an older cousin who's family was a bit more established than mine was; so they always had
the latest entertainment technology before we did l (see: po' relations); like the VCR, which in the ,80's cost thousands of dollars. Therefore, when
movies started to be distributed on VHS tapes..my older cousin had the latest feature film releases, as my family had not been able to afford such '80's home-entertainment luxuries...before I even saw most of these films, at family gatherings; said older cousin would imitate the latest Richard Pryor/Eddie Murphy VHS Tapes or the latest Dirty Harry Movies. Nostalgia cannot be bought; though these amazing b-movies/mainstream movies influenced my pre-teen/teenager tastes, LONG before I became a filmmaker. Fast forward a few decades; said
'mentor' cousin [and a few brothers of mine] and I grew apart [for various reasons I find uninteresting], as most youthful experiences usually
do. Due to technology becoming cheaper..I eventually became a feature movie-maker...I also started to be influenced by my parent's drive in/grind-house b-movie tastes. Due to my lack of experience in this new venture..I edited my upcoming feature films on YouTube, as 'audieNce preview' screenings' to get feed-back to see if I'm on the right track as feature 'genre' a movie-maker ; before I released my products as either theatrical or DVD releases. One Day, my 'mentor' [and a brother of mine] asked how are those 'little' YouTube movies
doing?' Now, considering 100 million-200 million dollar movies are previewed on Youtube;I was insulted..Plus their snobbish demeanor showed evil intent...no room for sarcasm. Hero's Die..so I litterally and figuratively say to these kind of people..f*ck you, you snobbish, evil, jealous pricks! How dare you assholes piss on my
parade. In short..my motivation to succeeding in this industry is not just ego..or lust
for profit..but, to put these ass-holes in their place. Therefore, do not be surprised if I BLOW UP in this industry, as cousins [brothers]like this [and various aquaintances and family members] fuee my lust to succeed. 'nuff said *he said smiling* TW [aka Tex} p.s . It is a shame that a good man like my pal;: Martin Magee had to die, and these pricks are still alive!..May God forgive me for my venting..but, a few wine-glasses later; I hadda say it, ma-an! -['From the" I may regret thjis in the morning dept".]

Martin visited me more times than all my friends [?], including my own family...he was more than an onscreen buddy..he was humble , a good Christian & had a good heart.....the closeness we have onscreen was real, as we shot the roles to our own personality....including the agressive blasting away of blood-thirsty heathen zombies [kidding]. This week at the movies, we've got a wacky workplace (Extract, starring Jason Bateman and Ben Affleck), crazy love (All About Steve, starring Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper), and videogame violence (Gamer, starring Gerard Butler and Ludacris). What do the critics have to say?
Sugar is an exceptionally-crafted film -- part sports flick, part immigrant tale -- with touching and poignant drama highlighted by splendid performances.
I have only been hearing sketchy rumors..but, if it's true..I'm saddened to report that my dear friend & Frankenpimp co-star Martin Abdule Magee has passed away.. I don't think this is a joke...I hope it is...he was an amazing human being....that's all I have to say for now.

When
it cane to Lana's shower seqeunce, we seemed to have more crew than
normal, that day...Lewis Mercer [Actor/Co-producer] even showed up
5-minutes early onset, for the scene, for the first time in his life. Elvin
was gracious with helping out with the line readings, for Krista N.,
who could not make it to that day's shoot; cos of family stuff [turns
out things are lookin' up for K..very kewll], so we slapped an afro wig
on Vivita; to play a hastilly made up character:Louisianna Lulabelle

Cajun, we filmmakers will find it hard to explain to the audience, why

that summer's over we gotta rush to do our exterior shots before the

than generous..oh yeah, very generous..[Thanks again girls!!]. Now
we're gonna shoot the movie in sequence [that way, as Lloyd Kaufman's

in a horror movie is easy to do...I already CGI'd a huge anvil, that

This week at the movies, we've got an alien nation (District 9, starring Jason Cope and Sharlto Copley); a high school musical (Bandslam, starring Gaelan Connell and Vanessa Hudgens); a goldfish/human hybrid
(Ponyo, with voice work by Cate Blanchett and Noah Cyrus); an ill-timed love affair (The Time Traveler's Wife, starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana), and some renegade salesmen (The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, starring Jeremy Piven and Ving Rhames). What do the critics have to say?
Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination, and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic.
Since there is no set shooting scheds for indie-movies..most times to shoot is on weekends [very rarely on weekdays as most Canadian show-biz folks have day McJobs]...and ALSO the fact that most folks change their looks over a period of time..we filmmakers tend to shoot the various principal character's individual shots ASAP, before moving on to shooting the other cast of characters. On Sat., Aug 9, 2009 at 12:04 Noon..I showed up onset at the indie-horror 'Acid Head''s Co-Producer/Co-Director/Co-Star:
Lewis Mercer's
luxury condo building
boardroom set [4-minutes late..but, that's good for indie-production crews]. I was fully loaded, ready for battle like a one-man army; shuffling in tired, alone [and amped on Red-Bull], with my camera-equipment, props, scripts, clapboard, notes, storyboards & my various peronal Mob-Boss costumes, for the day's shoot as the camera-dude/co-editor Luke Van Belkom was on another set; possibly having A HELLUVA lot more fun than I was...I'm not complaining tho'...this sort of hustling is the nature of the cinematic beast. I was called on my cell, on route [Gardiner Expressway, west-bound]; earlier by actor:
Ronnie Basch
[nearly spilling my red-bull breakfast all over myself as i fumbled for my fabled nokia], that he was picking up some extra wardrobe for the shoot and
would be a bit late..I told him all was fine, that by the time I set up, he'll be ready to rock'n'roll [I marveled at his professionalism as I found that most indie-actors don't usually call , when they are late or not show up]. 10 minutes later Co-Producer/Co-Director/Co-Star: Lewis Mercer showed up [14 minutes late..but, that's good for indie-production
Co-Producer/Co-Director/Co-Stars]. 5 minutes later Ron B. showed up in his flashy, sporty black convertable...I made a mental note, to ask him to use it in a future shoot, as it looked awesome. 9 minutes later, fashionably late, actor:
Elvin Domenic
, graced up with his presence..
presence..[28 minutes late..but, that's good for indie-..aah skip it!].
Now, when this motley bunch got together and I set up the props and shots [whilst changing into my wardrobe, by the way] and discussing with the actors, their mobster seq. scenes for the day [ as Co-director Lewis M., had not yet seen my revised rewrites on the script]...this multi-tasking business is a skill I've perfected over the years on my upcoming b-movies: Frankenpimp & Vixen Highway 2006., by the way. Folks looked in while we were filming the boardroom sequences and gawking..I figured because: a/ Most folks in the last 10 years had not seen grown-ups smoke inside a building. b/ We looked like
we wuz
holdin' a 70's-style mafia meeting [ I figured that I was qualified to write a mobster sequence, as I am as of this time, on level 24 in the 'Mafia Wars' application on Facebook, as 'Don Pastafarian']. Anyhow, after a slight camera scare where the film came spooling out like a pasta-fazool dinner, out of a choking grandparent..we did fine! The shoot went
fantastic...cuz, unlike most indie-movies...these actors were amazing...which is unlike most indie-movie sets I've been on....to be cont'd
John Hughes,[by my opinion, the 80's most important teen: director, producer, and writer ], died Thursday. His movies totally defined the era, and for myself; more than a few of his 'Brat-Pack' monologues were used by myself in acting classes, and [unfortunatly] on my
younger brothers [ACTION-WISE] when I abused them; by imitating Chet [Big Brother from Hell]..from WEIRD SCIENCE...and since they grew up FOR THE MOST PART: to be hateful, apathetic little assholes...I don't know if the whole Chet [and Bruce Lee] influences were totally wrong. In any case...John I personally am gonna miss you, as the J.D. Salinger of the late 20th century and as a fellow director, producer, and screenwriter..I salute you Sir!.. I hope my upcoming ACID HEAD teen horror does not totally urinate all over the memory of his works..which unlike Hughes' movies; disrespects modern teens p.s. John, I wish I remembered to put your name at the end of the Frankenpimp's 'Special Thanks'
credits' Johnny-Boy..it'll have to wait for VIXEN HIGHWAY 2006, I guess...rock on! p.s.s more on an old tribute to Hughes c/o

This week at the movies, we got real American heroes (GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, starring Dennis Quaid and Sienna Miller); kitchen chronicles (Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy
Adams); and honeymoon horror (A Perfect Getaway, starring Timothy Olyphant and Milla Jovovich). What do the critics have to say?
John Hughes, the director, producer, and writer whose insightful and heartfelt teen comedies defined an era, died Thursday of cardiac arrest. He was 59 years old.
