Things started going downhill for Eddie Murphy around the time of this 1986
clunker, in which the comic actor plays a social worker predicted to be the
savior of a kidnapped child, who has special powers to heal the Earth. Dennis
Feldman's script and director Michael Ritchie (The Candidate), a once-thoughtful
satirist, stumble over every link in a chain of fantasy-fueled sequences. Murphy
phones it in, and Charles Dance (Pascali's Island) looks foolish in retrospect.

The Golden Child
(1986)
Some time after Chandler (Eddie Murphy) and Kee (Charlotte Lewis) return home
from Tibet with the Ajanti Dagger, Sardo (Charles Dance) and his men attack them
at their secret hiding place, taking the dagger and killing Kee. Chandler goes
to see Kala (Shakti) the next day, where she tells him that the Golden Child
(J.L. Reate) could bring Kee back to life, but he also learns from Dr. Hong
(James Hong) that the child had to be found before nightfall, since Sardo could
not kill him with the dagger until dark.
With the aid of the Golden Child's pet bird, Chandler finds Sardo's hideout. He
reclaims the dagger, and is eventually led by Til (Randall Cobb)- a henchman of
Sardo turned to the side of good by the Golden Child's touch -to where the
Golden Child is being kept. They free him, but when Chandler finds Sardo shortly
afterwards, Sardo transforms into his true demon self and goes after Chandler
and the child. They escape an attack from Sardo at an abandoned water tower, but
while there Sardo gets hold of the dagger again. When they arrive back at
Kala's, Sardo attacks them a second time. He tries to stab Chandler with the
dagger, but the necklace Chandler got from the Old Man (Victor Wong) back in
Tibet protects him and knocks the dagger from Sardo's claws. The Golden Child
gets the dagger back into Chandler's hands, and Chandler stabs Sardo with it,
making him explode. The Golden Child then brings Kee back to life, and Chandler
and Kee kiss.
The last scene shows Chandler, Kee, and the Golden Child having a pleasant walk
together, Kee saying that she was going to return the Golden Child to Tibet and
then come back to Los Angeles to be with Chandler. Chandler jokes to the Golden
Child that he should enter show business and use his powers to become famous.

July 28, 1986 Vol. 26 No. 4 Roman Polanski's New Protégée, Charlotte Lewis, Star
of Pirates and All of 18She's 18 going on something other than 19. There's not a
whole lot of the world that Charlotte Lewis' hazel eyes haven't seen except a
high school diploma. The exotically beautiful result of her Irish-English
mother's yearlong affair with a Chilean-Iraqi physician, she never knew her
father. "I don't need him," she says matter-of-factly. At age 14, she left home
and school to pursue a modeling career in Paris, where she indulged in drugs,
alcohol and chronic late nights. "I was rebelling against everything," Lewis
says. After six months she came out of her tailspin. "I realized I looked about
110 years old," she says. "I stopped drinking, smoking and taking drugs." But at
sweet 16, she was ready to turn her attention from modeling to bigger things.
"I'd like to be a famous, famous actress," she joked to a friend who got her an
audition with Roman Polanski. She landed the sole female role as a 17th-century
Spanish maiden in his film Pirates. As for whispers that she's the director's
new romantic lead à la Nastassia Kinski, she replies sharply, "Roman never mixes
business with pleasure." After Pirates, Lewis' looks got her cast as a Tibetan
priestess in Eddie Murphy's upcoming The Golden Child. Of Murphy she raves: "If
I have a son, I'd want him to be just like Eddie." She doesn't talk about
Mikhail Baryshnikov, a sometime date, and says she has no serious boyfriend.
Lewis resides in London's Chelsea district. Her self-advertisement for
employment: "I've got confidence and I'm a hard worker." She also admits to
pulling strings on occasion. "I pray a lot," she says. Folding her hands and
rolling her eyes toward heaven, she demonstrates. "Puhleeze, puhleeze, can't I
get the part? I'll be good the rest of my life." As Mae West would say, "Young
lady, goodness has nothing to do with it."

LOS ANGELES Sometimes, like the night her new movie "The Golden Child" opened in
New York, Charlotte Lewis acts like the 19-year-old she is. After the gala
premiere screening, she and co-star Eddie Murphy snuck into another theater
where the film was playing.
"The crowd was going nuts," said the dark-eyed young actress, excitement tinging
her normally reserved, thoroughly British voice. "You could hardly hear anything
we said onscreen, they were so loud. And in the scenes where I'm not wearing

And how am I reminded of Charlotte Lewis? By watching "Seinfeld" of
course. It was the episode where George dates a woman who he thinks
is bulimic. "She's refunding."
Well, ladies and gentlemen, that's Charlotte Lewis, the sexy young
vixen who starred along side Eddie Murphy in The Golden Child. So
what is she up to today?
Can't seem to see her too recently (she's in London taking care of
her mother) but a couple of notables: She was on the cover of
Playboy and did a lesbian scene with Alyssa Milano (yes, nudity) in
the movie Embracing the Vampire.

By the way, I'm fully convinced that the video game character Chun
Li from Streetfighter 2 is based on Lewis' character in The Golden

Just wanted to point that out.

Murphy gets mystical in '80s adventure comedy.
CONTENT CSM Sexual Content
Lots of innuendo with romance between two of the main characters. A
woman appears in a man's dreams wearing a sexy outfit and tied up
with toilet paper. A couple gets dressed in the morning making it
clear that they spent the night together. A woman is described as
being raped by a dragon. Violence
Martial arts-style fighting with weapons and injuries; a demon wants
to kill a child; a girl is murdered and we see police taking pictures
of her body, but her body isn't shown. The bad guys try to feed a
child oatmeal with blood in it. Monks are killed trying to protect a
child from demons, and a woman is shot in the back with an arrow.
Language
Quite a bit of swearing. No f-bombs, but just about everything else,
at least once. Message Social Behavior
A classic good-vs.-evil story with the good guy not being a perfect
angel, but learning from his failings. The "golden child" represents
compassion in the world. Commercialism

Rating: PG-13 for violence, scary images, sexual humor, language and
brief nudity
Studio: Paramount
Directed By: Michael Ritchie
Cast: Eddie Murphy Running Time: 94
Release Date: 03/09/1999
Genre: Comedy Common Sense Note
Parents need to know this movie has satanic imagery, mystical
theories about the world, and some violence, including martial arts-
style fighting with weapons and deaths, and attempted violence
against a child. There's also plenty of sexual innuendo between two
of the main characters who eventually sleep together, but nothing is
shown.Families can talk about culture shock and comedy. Most of the
laughs come from Eddie Murphy's character bumbling through unfamiliar
traditions. What other comedies use this type of humor? When does it
cross the line into stereotyping or laughing at other traditions?
Does this movie do that?
Common Sense Review
Review by Terreece Clarke
THE GOLDEN CHILD is a mystical, comedy adventure about Chandler
Jarrell, a private detective who finds out his destiny is not just to
find runaway children, but to save the "golden child," a bringer of
compassion to the world, from the demon who has kidnapped him and
will ultimately kill him. Beautiful, mysterious woman, Kee Nang,
joins him on his quest. Though initially skeptical of Kee and her
story of the golden child, he soon realizes that not only is the
Golden Child real, the demons that are after him are, too.
This is classic 1980s Eddie Murphy. He sails through a pretty weak
plot with his trademark humor, almost lending some validity to the
nonsense going on around him. Murphy's Chandler is an endearing bad
boy who can be a bit of a jerk when he encounters cultures that
differ from his own.
Kids will love the adventure, the cute kid playing the Golden Child,
and will probably get a good laugh at the '80s special effects.
Parents may cringe at the thrown-together romance and the disturbing
satanic imagery, but will also enjoy Murphy's great comedic timing
and ad libs.
Other mystical adventures: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost
Ark, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Clash of
the Titans

The most interesting Screenshots for the "Golden Child, The" movie:
Golden Child, The
The Golden Child is said to have been originally conceived of as a
more serious adventure, intended to star Mel Gibson, but those plans
fell through. When Eddie Murphy (Beverly Hills Cop, Trading Places)
became available, the project changed from a spiritual adventure film
to an action-comedy, with each scene reconstructed in order to play
more for laughs than for drama or awe. Murphy was also given a
liberal amount of leeway to ad-lib his lines whenever appropriate,
which pretty much meant all of the time. Luckily, for the makers of
the film, Eddie Murphy is a gifted on-the-spot comedian, as he is by
far the best element of this rather routine, uninspiring fantasy
adventure.
When a young boy (Reate, a girl in real life) is taken from a secret
Tibetan monastery, an all-out international search goes out to find
him. You see, the boy is no ordinary boy — he is the long-awaited
second "Golden Child", he has come to make the world a better, more
humane place. The abductor of the child is one of the Devil's
minions, a powerful demon posing as a man, Sardo Numspa (Dance, Alien
3), who proceeds to try to corrupt the child and destroy his powers
to do good. Meanwhile, the monastery sends one of its agents, a
skilled martial artist and priestess named Kee Nang (Lewis,
Storyville), to find a man rumored to be the "Chosen One", who must
overcome many trials to gain back the Golden Child. That man is Los
Angeles youth-oriented social worker and finder of lost children
Chandler Jarrell (Murphy), whose demeanor isn't the stuff of great
prophecy — he's a potty-mouthed smart aleck. With almost no time to
spare, Chandler must perform a series of tasks in order to rescue the
child from the clutches of Numspa himself — easy as pie (not) — only
the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
I think that there are probably two sets of people that would choose
to watch The Golden Child. The first, and probably the largest set
is the crowd that comes in just to watch Eddie Murphy in action,
hoping he'll make them laugh. The second, smaller set is the action-
fantasy lovers looking to see a well-told tale of adventure and
mysticism. It's pretty safe to say that if you belong to the first
set, you're far more likely to enjoy the film than the second, as
this is definitely a film aiming more for Eddie's fan base, not
particularly concerned with its story or plot elements when they get
in the way of allowing Eddie to do his thing in front of the camera.
Cutting down to the chase, The Golden Child is one of those films
that could have been respectable if they didn't stick in the world's
hottest comedian into it, whose fans are going to expect constant
wisecracks and irreverence, doing just what he did for another film
originally meant to be serious, Murphy's superstar-making Beverly
Hills Cop. Thankfully, once Murphy was on board, at least the
producers had the wisdom to allow him to give his fans exactly what
they paid to see.
The Golden Child is a very cheesy post-Temple of Doom adventure that
falls apart whenever you begin to take it seriously. For the most
part, it is a critical failure as a film for the reason that it
occasionally makes its own mistake of doing just that, taking itself
seriously, particularly as the film gets into the climax where Sardo
Numspa goes into full demon mode and wreaks havoc in an effort to get
the child at any cost. It also doesn't help that the film seems
conflicted in its aim to be a family-friendly adventure, while also
allowing Eddie to spout of constant vulgarities (this is probably the
film that has the most liberal use of the word "ass" that I can think
of) and also elude to wanting to bed the lovely Kee Nang at every
available opportunity alone.
Here is the part where I have to admit to readers that I consider The
Golden Child to be one of my guiltiest of pleasures — a movie I know
is bad, but somehow I find it entertaining to an extent that I'm
actually somewhat embarrassed to admit liking it. While the main
plot is practically worthless (Numspa's henchmen in particular are
too silly-looking to find menacing), Murphy consistently makes me
laugh time and time again. From a performance standpoint, it's hard
to describe into words just why Murphy makes it funny, but suffice it
to say, he never bothers to take any of the story seriously enough to
care, riffing and reacting to his surroundings, always in tune with
who his persona is, and never seeming desperate to inject laughs.
He knows exactly the funniest way to say things. For instance, a
scene where Murphy is in the monastery asking the high priest for a
legendary knife merely asks him to say, "I want the knife.", which he
does, saying just that. However, the fact that he is somewhat
desecrating centuries-old customs and religious rituals by asking is
such a semi-mocking tone (he must spin a wheel-like portion of the
entrance pillar to talk, which he proceeds to use as a hip hop DJ
would a vinyl record) turns a simple request into one of the film's
hilarious highlights. When his joke doesn't go over well, he follows
it up by trying to take it more seriously, but so seriously it is
also just as funny, as he makes a big to-do of it, holding his arms
high in the air and affecting a mocking reverential tone to ask for
the knife as he spins the prayer wheel — then spins it one more time
to add the word, "Please." Murphy is in the zone, at the peak of his
improvisational prowess, playing completely to the audience that know
his style well, and he delivers.
It probably goes without saying that if you don't find Eddie Murphy
funny, you'll absolutely detest The Golden Child. This is a film
that has only his comedic performance to anchor it, and if that alone
doesn't bring you joy, you're going to be in for 90+ minutes of pure
hell. However, for a Murphy fan, like myself, it's fun to watch him
injected into a bad movie and completely make fun of it from the
inside out. As long as you take the film as seriously as Eddie,
i.e., not at all, he'll safely guide you through the story's
pitfalls, just like a Chosen One should.

The quoted poster makes an excellent point. There is a big difference
between most memorable character and best performance.
Outside of any SNL or stand-up related performances (my favorite of
those, however, would be Clarence, the fifth Beatle), Murphy's most
memorable characters would be a three-way tie between Axel Foley,
Reggie Hammond and Prince Akeem.
Hammond gets the vote of the three, however, because 48 Hours is my
favorite Murphy film.

Charlotte Lewis, as Kee Nang in the hit 1986 film "The Golden Child"
opposite Eddie Murphy, is a certified action starlet! Kee is a terrific
character on many levels. She has that exotic Asian beauty (her
character is Tibetan), tall and statuesque, and can definitely muscle
around the bad guys! She kicks, punches, tosses punks around, and even
does, as Eddie's character in the movie says, "that thing...with the
flip!". I like it that she doesn't fall all over the male lead right
away like a lot of film heroines do. She eases up eventually, but at
first is not all that impressed with Eddie. Kee Nang has that dry wit
which is actually pretty funny. In addition, she can take care of
herself and Eddie just fine. She only has to get saved once when she
sacrifices herself in front of a crossbow dart to save Eddie. Kee Nang
dies, but is brought back to life by Eddie near the end of the film
after the villain is killed. Happy ending! Then she and Eddie are an
item after they've saved the world...which is a good thing!
Incidentally, Charlotte Lewis is from England, but her ethnic
background is Irish and Arabian.

For some reason whenever I tell people I'm watching The Golden Child,
everyone always laughs. But it is you, my friends, who should be
laughed at. The Golden Child is a damn good movie. First off, I'll
admit I'm a big Eddie Murphy fan, but that doesn't bias me. I'm not
that into the more recent work Eddie's done. But Golden Child is back
in the Beverly Hills Cop era. You can't fuck with Axel Foley.
In The Golden Child, Eddie does a similar routine to the Axel bit,
but you can't hate on a movie based on Tibetan Buddhist mysticism.
The funny thing about Eddie's performance in Golden Child is that
he's both the main character and the comic relief. He totally goofs
off and makes light of the situation until he sees the naked snake
woman and his girlfriend catches a crossbow bolt. The movie's a
little goofy, I'll admit, but at the same time the Tibetan mysticism
angle is really fun. There's even a demon and a creepy monkey man.
Also, I noticed the dagger from this movie must be the same prop as
the Purba knife in The Shadow. It has the same look and shape and
size and everything, down to the faces on the hilt.
If you laugh instead of watching The Golden Child, you should check
it out again and laugh while you watch The Golden Child. It's a fun
80's adventure movie in the spirit of Big Trouble Little China with
classic Eddie Murphy humor. The special FX are even pretty impressive
for the time period. Get a kick out of the dancing Pepsi can and ask
yourself, "Has there ever been a more perfect product placement?"
