And now they are getting their due among the academic world. Anyone who is
interested in life before electronic, I post this with permission. By the way,
the Ming Wathne collection was all Star Wars zines from 1977 onwards. The OTW is
the Organization for Transformational Works
http://transformativeworks.org/node/694

******

The OTW is pleased to announce that we will be partnering with the
University of Iowa to create a Fan Culture Preservation Project.

The Special Collections department at the University of Iowa already has
a strong interest in zines, and is making a concerted effort to collect
zines and other artifact of fan culture (con programs and flyers, for
instance) in order to preserve them and make them accessible to wider
popular and research audiences. Iowa is home to a huge (250,000)
collection of science fiction and fantasy zines and APA zines, as well
as a collection of Riot Grrrl and Underground Music Zines. Media fandom
is not as well represented, and they are eager to collect many aspects
of fan culture, including all types of fanfiction.

The first major donation brokered by OTW is the Fanzine Archive, a
collection of over 3,000 classic zines previously housed in Santa
Barbara--over 62 boxes! The OTW was able to help the retiring archivist,
Ming Wathne, save and protect this valuable collection. Special
Collections is currently in the process of sorting and boxing Ming's
zines. Soon after that is finished, titles in the Fanzine Archive
collection will be listed in a finding aid on the Special Collections
website. We are currently helping other long time fans donate their
collections to the library.

OTW and Iowa are eventually hoping to explore ways to digitize some of
these materials, so that fans who want to see them will have access,
even if they can't get to Iowa. (We are only talking about works where
we have legal clearance; both the University of Iowa and the OTW are
concerned about fan privacy first and foremost.) The Special Collections
department at the University of Iowa is also willing to photocopy
materials for a price of about $.25 cents a page, according to their
standard procedures.

Moving? Apartment getting too small? If you have zines you no longer
want (or more than you can manage!) but want to know they'll find a good
home, please contact the OTW. We can arrange for postage to be paid and
for UPS to come to your house to pick up the boxes. You might also
consider leaving your collection to the Fan Culture Preservation Project
or making arrangements through a friend.

Please help us preserve this important part of fannish history!

I have both the playstation SW Lego games and my daughter and I play them a

I don't get cable so I have to wait until the DVDs come out. However,
with regard to the movie, which I did see thanks to my ASIFA/Hollywood
membership, I was refreshed by a way more feisty Padme. Asoka Tano
just seemed too much like a Mary Sue character, a wish fulfillment
character targeted to little girls. Kim Possible with a lightsabre.

However...I am a MAJOR Asajj Ventress fangirl. She is awesome with a
capital AWW YEAH. What I want to see is a fight between her and Mace
Windu, but that might be a problem because Mace would probably cut her
to charred ribbons. Ventress may be BADASSSSSS but Windu-san is the
BMF of the Jedi Order. I don't know what a Ventress demise would do to
the official canon. And it might be too intense of a situation for the
little ones who are the audience for this series to see.

I know this is off topic, but it's also nice to see an Anakin who is
not a whiny brat. The character design reminds me of a less muscle-y
Henry Rollins and actually Rollins might have been a good choice to do
his voice, although I like the guy who does the voice. In any case
either one kicks all manner of ass over Hayden Christiansen, or
"Little Wooden Boy" as I have dubbed him. Heck, even Keanu Reeves
would have been better than Hayden Christiansen! And remember the
fanboy outrage over the possibility of Leonardo diCaprio as Anakin?
Leo would have been awesome, because he's not just a pretty face, but
an actor of great chops. Check out "The Basketball Diaries" or "What's
Eating Gilbert Grape?" sometime if you haven't because it shows that
the level he's at now with things like "The Departed" was not far
removed from the level he was at early in his career. It's just his
popularity around when AOTC was being cast was so huge that there was
a backlash. Of course, if he had done Anakin instead of hooking up
with Martin Scorcese and doing first "Gangs Of New York" then "The
Aviator" and then "The Departed" he would have permanently been
typecast. And of course, looking at it from the point of view of an
actor, working with a director like Scorcese over a director (heh heh)
like Lucas is no contest. Scorcese beats Lucas any day of the week.

What does anyone think of the new cartoon series with its female
characters?

Personally, I think the Padawan Ahshoka (with the world's most
untypeable name) has improved a lot since the movie, and I give the
series some leeway because it's animation. Got some exciting action
scenes as well.

Southlake man's 'Star Wars' museum will be open for fundraiser

ROANOKE -- Phillip Wise isn't a Jedi.

He isn't a stormtrooper or a wookie, either.

But this Saturday, he is giving local Star Wars fans the next best
thing to actually stepping into that famous world set a long time ago
in a galaxy far, far away.

Wise, who has turned his love for everything Star Wars into several
successful businesses, is opening the doors to his personal Star Wars
museum in Roanoke for the first time this weekend.

It's all part of a fundraiser to benefit Southlake Safety Town, a
planned development in Bicentennial Park that will teach kids how to
be safe. Tickets for adults cost $50. Children 12 and under can get
in for $15.

Wise, 55, of Southlake, has been a fan of George Lucas' wildly
successful franchise since he saw the first film 31 years ago. But it
wasn't until 1995 that his fascination with the films developed into
something more.

I and some friends went to the midnight show. Overall, the movie was
good. Some of the music drove me nuts. (I am a huge John Williams
fan). One of the songs reminded me of Blue Berry Hill by Fats Domino.

I am excited to see the tv show. I think they will get most of the
kinks worked out.

Seriously. I thought that a Jedi Padawan was to show respect to her Master. I
mean, if I spoke to my sensei like that I'd be doing push-ups for the next
twenty years of my life... :D

I remember in a comic book about Boba Fett that Jabba's wife was
pregnant and he was all upset that Gardulla had been kidnapped. I don't
remember the comic, but I actually remember the panel, art and all
because I thought "what disgusting p0rn that must be, Hutts mating; I
was hoping for simple cell division"!

In Ep 1 the other Hutt pictured at the race was Gardulla (the one little
Anakin said liked to gamble too much and had lost he and Shmi in a game
to Watto). So this spawn of Jabba has been eluded to in the EU and is
plausible.

I liked the move, hated the Sky Guy/youngling jibes: you would have
thought Anakin of all people would know what it's like to not be
accepted by the Jedi. Please let me know when the spoilers can begin,
I's chomping at the bit about a certain duel.

The R2-KT was cool. I'm glad that was included, too.

Bridget, you are so right about "R2ee" - that was so
bad I was hoping that I just misunderstood her and she
really didn't say it!

I think it will be a great TV show, because it will be
shorter.

I don't remember a Hutlet being mentioned. If I'm not mistaken, according to the
Han Solo trilogy, another Hutt was in control at this time. I don't remember the
name, but Jabba killed both that Hutt and that Hutt's child shortly before the
Battle of Yavin. So I think this movie fell outside the EU/Novel Canon.

At least they didn't mention Jabba's wife...since Hutts are "transsexual" and
can be male or female at any time. (Again, see the Han Solo trilogy.)

A quick question:
Does anyone else remember this "Hutlet" being mention in any of the
books or any where else besides the movie? I don't recall a mention of
this particular hutt having a child?
I'll post my thoughts on the movie later.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one. We named our daughter after Katie Johnson.
I'm glad that they put her in.

There is a Princess Leia poster near my daughters room. My Mother in law
told me that Katie was looking at a Disney Princess' bubble bath and she
looked at her and said "Mam-maw...where is Princess Leia?"
My husband and I liked the movie. I read some of the reviews and got kind
of scared when Entertainment Weekly gave it an F. We liked it. People just
have to remember that it was originally supposed to be on TV not in the
theater. "Sky Guy" got on my nerves but not as bad as "R2ee"
