The SARLACC (Seattle Area Lucasfilm Artifact Collectors Club) is going. I think
the tentative plan is to meet at the centerhouse but details are still being
hammered out.

I am not an admin or moderator of this group.  I am not in the Pacific Northwest of the US either - but I am in Canada's pacific northwest.  This group has regional interest, and as such I don't see that it would have much appeal to you.  Discussions will be about events taking place in this geographic region and building tips that may be relevant to items on sale in local stores or chains.

I admin the Canadian R2 Builders group and would not accept your membership there for those reasons.  However, I also admin the R2-Autonomous group (a group for those who are adding various levels of autonomous behaviour to their droids - ie computer control etc)  You are most welcome there!   There is also the main R2 Builders yahoo group and the forums and information atastromech.net where you will find more information that you will find useful.  Stay in touch with the UK group as well - that way you will hear about their get-togethers - which are invaluable as a building resource.

The aim is to build the body as cheaply as possible, with the legs fixed in the 3 legged position. No fancy 2-3-2 to cut down on weight and cost...Was thinking wood, as I can get off-cuts of wood very cheaply from a local D.I.Y store...But It's been suggested to me that building a Styrene droid would be cheaper in the cost of materials, and in the cost of the motors, because the droid would be lighter, and therefore smaller motors would be needed for the feet... infact, I'm told that the same motors used for dome rotation could be used in the feet of a Styrene Droid.
Now for the head... I recieved a Lasercut Styrene R2 dome from a parts run on Astromech.net last week, and I'm chuffed to bits with it. I'm planning on having the rear and front logic displays lit up and twingling, and both the PSI's doing their switching colour thing. The top and rear Holo Projectors I thought of having as fixed resin copies, yet the front HP I haven't decided on having a fixed HP, or one that's fitted to a servo so it can move? all depends on costs.
And of course, they'll be the sounds too.
I'm also looking at R4 and R5 heads to be interchangable with the body to give me 3 droids to choose from.
My Missus wants the droid to be pink (only reason I can build one. lol)So, I'm currently in negotiations with the Missus as "How Much" pink the Droid(s)
So far, I'm working on the Styrene R2 dome, whilst looking for a source within the UK for Styrene sheets large enough to start building the rest of the Droid.

Pics will start being posted:
A: If I work out how to post them ( Many different forums have many different ways to upload images...most of which confuse me, Lol )
B: If you allow me to remain a member, Dispite living outside the US (I'm expecting you to decline my membership, as I've been declined from a US R2 group before...Only 1 group is basedin the UK, so I've discovered so far, as the bulk of R2 builders are US based)

All the best

Hello!!

Well, I feel abit of a fraud here....or at least, unsure I'll be allowed to stay
a member as I live outside the Pacific NW region of the states... Alot further
infact, as I Live in the UK, across the pond!!

I am, However building an Astromech, and it appears whilst registering with
every "R2" bulders groups out there, I registered here too, without reading that
this group was for Pacific NW builders only...
I have already been denied membership from an R2 building site, for not living
in the US..... But so long as online help is at hand, and well documented online
building blogs are there for other members to follow, does it really matter
where that builder lives in the world as they're still contributing to the
site???

Anyway.... If you'll allow me to stay a member, I'd like to say that despite
wanting an R2 of my own since my earliest memories... I've recently completed a
full scale Dalek from the UK show Dr Who, which I use to help raise money for
charity alongs side Stormtroopers from the both the 501st Uk Garrison and
Banthas Squad. So I thought it was about time an R2 joined our charity group.

Thanks Shag,
I will be sure to post pictures of the process here. I'm really at a loss when
it comes to the electronics. My R2 will have the lights, sounds, dome and foot
motors. It's 3 leg mode. I was thinking of getting in on the latest JEDI run
but I really don't know if I can set it up and make it work. :p So I contacted
Dan S. with the R2 builders and he said he can set up a power distrabution board
for me. As for controllers I'm thinking Vantec. I saw some of the builders at
ComicCon and talked with them about what they used and any issues they've had
with their electronics. The majority use Vantec.

Also talked to (2-1B) builder Chris last night at the collecting meeting. He
says that I could use arduino's for very cheep. Now, I might be a bit over my
head but if Chris is willing to help me out a bit on it I think I can figure out
how to use them for the rest of the components I need.

Still wavering on using a Pittman motor for the dome drive, I also need to put
in an order for the drive wheel (but that's a run that's always open on
astromech.net).

As for the drives the ones I have were made using the new 'Senna Drive System'
as shown in his demo video, parts list and drawing. Wasn't so bad and should
work out pretty well.

Now I've talked you ears off the only thing left to say is... happy building!
~Amy

That's more like it!

"Good advice Amy gives you, heed her words you should!"

Great to hear of the foot drive install proceeding Amy! If you have pics to post
in the files area, please feel free.

What radio system are you using/planning to use? Foot motors, gear reduction,
etc. etc.? Static 3rd leg or 2/3/2? Dome drive? Lighting, sound, yada, yada,

Let's get some building action in here. It's been too dead for too long.

My personal situation has made it impossible to do any bot building for the last
year. Nothing like having all your possessions thrown in a heap to put a damper
on a complex project. Thanks to the former Mrs. R.E.K. the mostly mundane, for
totally disrupting my life, and that of my Padawan learner. :P

I'll be installing foot drives on my R2 in another two weeks or so. It's a slow assembly but it is coming together nicely!
