Review: Woody Allen's Whatever Works not quite working

By DAVID GERMAIN
AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES — The title of Woody Allen's new comedy, "Whatever Works," might define what the filmmaker has been up to the last few years.
Allen churns out a movie a year like clockwork, some OK, some mediocre, none very memorable. Sure, last year's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" drew solid audiences, won Penelope Cruz an Academy Award and was a step or two above other recent Allen flicks.
But the movie was emblematic of his output of late — slight plots, slighter characters, lackadaisical storytelling that recycles enough of the neuroses-fueled charm of his earlier films to keep the Woody Allen machine in business.
In other words, whatever works, emphasis on the word "whatever," delivered with a shrug.
"Whatever Works" upholds that uninspired standard, Allen returning to New York City after four films in Europe and falling back on familiar themes he examined more thoughtfully decades ago (the May-December romance is somehow less believable now that it's Larry David scoring a young babe rather than Allen).
With David as Allen's ranting, curmudgeonly stand-in, "Whatever Works" manages the funniest stream of one-line zingers the filmmaker has offered in a long while.
It's a lazy story, though, told lazily, starting with the casting of David himself. With their lovably grouchy and cynical demeanors, Allen and David — co-creator of "Seinfeld" and star of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" — certainly are kindred spirits.
Yet while Allen is not a great actor, he has the great gift of pathos, the rare ability, a la Charles Chaplin or Buster Keaton, to be not only a funny little man, but also a deeply sad little man.
David gets the laughs with his raving turn as misanthrope Boris Yellnikoff, a suicidal retired physicist who never met a person with whom he couldn't find extreme fault. But smirking his way through the movie, David never quite captures the melancholy and self-loathing underlying Boris' bluster.
Allen also has David's Boris spouting long-winded monologues right into the camera. A small dose of these self-conscious ramblings might have worked, but here they turn into protracted and awkward stump speeches for the unworthiness of humanity.
David's contrived performance is matched by the contrivances of Allen's story as a circle of kooks and oddballs come into Boris' orbit despite his off-putting manner.
First comes Evan Rachel Wood as naive, big-hearted Southern runaway Melody, whom Boris rescues off the New York streets. Despite Boris' savage put-downs (and some of the insults truly are hilarious), Melody falls for her benefactor.
Next comes Melody's mother (Patricia Clarkson), then her dad (Ed Begley Jr.), religious fundamentalists who shed their conservatism and adopt wild new lives at the flip of a switch.
Allen creates stereotypes on one extreme only to turn them into stereotypes on the other extreme. The transformations are funny, and Wood, Begley and especially Clarkson bring depth and credibility to their characters that David's Boris lacks.
But the changes they undergo are gimmicky, the stuff of cheap laughs.
Allen says he originally wrote the screenplay in the 1970s with Zero Mostel in mind to play Boris. That almost certainly would have been a richer performance, but the discussion is academic. So whatever.
"Whatever Works," a Sony Pictures Classics release, is rated PG-13 for sexual situations including dialogue, brief nude images and thematic material. Running time: 92 minutes. Two stars out of four.

'True Blood' scoop: Evan Rachel Wood crowned Queen!

Apr 22, 2009, 06:10 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Ready for some fangstastic casting news?

Sources confirm to me exclusively that True Blood creator Alan Ball has tapped Evan Rachel Wood to play the pivotal role of Sophie-Anne, the vampire Queen of Louisiana!

Who dat, you ask? She's a 500-year-old vampire from France who is charming, wily, ruthless and wise. She's a consummate diplomat who has (or had) many of history's most famous people on speed dial.

Short story shorter: It's a major frakkin' part, and landing Wood (whose last significant TV gig was Once and Again) is a major frakkin' coup.

A True Blood insider tells me that Wood is booked for two episodes, both of which will air towards the end of the show's upcoming second season. But rest assured, if the show is renewed for a third season (and, please, it will be), Wood will be back. Again: Major frakkin' part.

Michelle Trachtenberg!

Evan with actress Michelle Trachtenberg at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. During the festival, both girls attended to the party for the movie "The Chumscrubber" (which is damn great, highly reccomended if you haven't seen it), Evan was at that party because this movie stars her ex, Jamie Bell.

And you probably know Michelle as Georgie from Gossip Girl. She's been in many other tv series (Buffy) and some movies (EuroTrip). She is a good actress, but I don't think many people really see it. It would be great to see them working together, beautiful and talented young ladies. And don't they look cute there?

Rachel Wood’s Feline Friend

We all know how much celebrities love their pets, and yesterday Rachel Wood was spotted toting around her cat Nicodemus as she left a Hollywood television studio.

The “Running with Scissors” skank stopped to sign autographs for fans, looking absolutely haggard in a fringed out black coat compete with rose pattern accents.

And it sounds like Rachel may have yet another new man in her life- according to eyewitnesses at last weekend’s Critics’ Choice Awards, she was getting pretty cozy with “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star/writer Jason Segal.

A source at the Viceroy hotel afterparty told press, “They were outside by themselves the whole time, chain smoking and flirting.” They reportedly left together around 9:30pm.

Evan Rachel Wood is Broadway's Mary Jane Watson

By Matt Brady

While Kirsten Dunst has brought Mary Jane Watson to life on the screen, it appears that Evan Rachel Wood will do the same on Broadway.

According to IESB, the actress confirmed that she has been cast as Mary Jane in the long-in-development Spider-Man musical. Rehersals, according to Wood, are scheduled to begin in June of 2009.

The musical has been in the works since 2004, and a suspected by some fans to be a joke for shortly after its initial announcement. The show will be produced by Julie (The Lion King) Taymor, while Bono and The Edge of U2 are writing the music and lyrics.

Last year, a reading was held for the musical, with Playbill describing the roles that needed to be filled for the musical.

From Playbill:

Among the roles being sought to fill are the young-man-turned-hero Peter Parker/Spider-Man ("male, late teens to early 20's...[with a] great pop/rock voice") and love-interest Mary Jane ("female, late teens to early 20's...[with a] great pop/rock voice") as well as villain Norman Osborn/Green Goblin and Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson (both call for "male, 50s.")

The character breakdowns provide some insight to plot points as the character Arachne ("female, 20-35 years old, any ethnicity") is described as "a beautiful, boastful young woman turned into a spider for her hubris and lack of respect for the gods. She subsequently appears to Peter Parker and the audience as in turn a powerful spider-woman who comes from another time to inspire Peter; an otherworldly lover; a bride; a terrifying (and sexy) dark goddess of vengeance; a dance partner in a charged and violent spiders dance of death; and, finally, a lonely, fragile young woman." Casting is seeking a "strong Celtic, Balkan style, e.g., Sinead O'Connor," noting, "outside the box ideas are welcomed. Could be someone from the music industry."

Also, a "Geek Chorus" consisting of "three teenage boys and one girl" are described to "meet to ritualistically retell the greatest Spider-Man stories.

Jim Sturgess, who co-starred with Wood in Across the Universe has been rumored to be playing Peter Parker in the musical. According to IESB, Wood said that they are “still trying to convince him.”

As reported by The New York Post in October, the current budget for Spider-Man: The Musical is a reported $40 million, making it the most expensive Broadway production in history.

As the Post’s Michael Riedel commented: If - and it's a big "if" where Julie The Lion Taymor is concerned - they do bring it in for $35 million, "Spider-Man," with a weekly running cost of $1 million, will have to run about 8,000 years in a Broadway theater just to break even.

Wood Reconnects with Her Estranged Dad Over Manson Split

Evan Rachel Wood turned to her estranged dad following her split from boyfriend Marilyn Manson and ended a long rift dating back to her childhood.

The 21-year-old actress flew back to her childhood home in North Carolina to spend the recent Thanksgiving holiday with her father Ira.

And the pair got on so well, Wood plans to return for Christmas.

The star, who recently ended her two-year romance with shock rocker Manson, says, "I was separated from my dad for most of my life, but we forgave each other for whatever had happened. It's huge for me. He's been the most supportive dad. No matter what has happened, he's always been there. And especially right now -- he's been so great. He really helped me out."

Are Evan Rachel Wood, Joseph Gordon-Levitt an item?

By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter

Evan Rachel Wood has reportedly moved on after her split from Marilyn Manson by dating actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The pair were spotted together at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards earlier in the month, with a source telling the National Enquirer: "This thing with Joseph has come out of nowhere. They've taken everyone by surprise. They were having so much fun together. They were dancing wildly, drinking and flirting.

"Joseph's a genuinely nice guy. He and Evan Rachel are very compatible and make a cute couple."

Wood's parents are thought to have objected to their daughter's romance with Manson, who was 18 years her senior.

The source added: "After her relationship with Manson, there's no doubt in my mind her parents are relieved she's finally dating someone clean cut and closer to her age."

Today in History -- Sunday, Sept. 7 (Diane Farr, Evan Rachel Wood)

Diane Farr was on Numbers, Roswell

By The Associated Press

Today is Sunday, Sept. 7, the 251st day of 2008. There are 115 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Sept. 7, 1907, the British liner RMS Lusitania set out from Liverpool, England, on its maiden voyage, arriving six days later in New York. (Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine in 1915.)

On this date:

In 1807, Denmark surrendered to British forces that had bombarded Copenhagen for four days.

In 1825, the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolution, bade farewell to President John Quincy Adams at the White House.

In 1908, pioneering heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey was born in Lake Charles, La.

In 1927, American television pioneer Philo T. Farnsworth, 21, succeeded in transmitting the image of a line through purely electronic means with a device called an "image dissector."

In 1940, Nazi Germany began its initial blitz on London during World War II.

In 1968, feminists protesting outside the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., tossed articles including cosmetics, girdles and bras into a trash can ostensibly for burning, although nothing was actually set on fire. (The winner of the pageant was Miss Illinois Judith Ford.)

In 1977, the Panama Canal treaties, calling for the U.S. to eventually turn over control of the waterway to Panama, were signed in Washington by President Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos.

In 1978, Bulgarian defector Georgi Markov, living in London, was stabbed in the leg by a man carrying an umbrella; Markov died four days later, an apparent victim of the Bulgarian secret police.

In 1987, Erich Honecker became the first East German head of state to visit West Germany as he arrived for a five-day visit.

In 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur was shot and mortally wounded on the Las Vegas Strip; he died six days later.

Ten years ago: St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGwire equaled Roger Maris' single-season home run record as he hit number 61 during a game against the Chicago Cubs. Russian lawmakers rejected Boris Yeltsin's candidate for prime minister, Viktor Chernomyrdin, for a second time, throwing the country into even deeper political turmoil.

Five years ago: In a speech to the nation on Iraq, President Bush said he was asking Congress for $87 billion to fight terrorism, and cautioned Americans that the struggle would "take time and require sacrifice." Yasser Arafat tapped the Palestinian parliament speaker, Ahmed Qureia, to take over as prime minister following the resignation of Mahmoud Abbas. In the men's singles final at the U.S. Open, Andy Roddick beat Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Britain-Ireland rallied to win the Walker Cup for an unprecedented third straight time. Singer-songwriter Warren Zevon died in Los Angeles at age 56.

One year ago: Osama bin Laden appeared in a video for the first time in three years, telling Americans they should convert to Islam if they wanted the war in Iraq to end. A federal judge ruled that Iran had to pay $2.65 billion to the families of the 241 U.S. service members killed in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut. A jury in St. Francisville, La., acquitted Sal and Mabel Mangano, the owners of a nursing home where 35 patients died after Hurricane Katrina, of negligent homicide and cruelty charges. Shawn Johnson won the women's all-around title at the world gymnastics championships in Stuttgart, Germany; among the men, China's Yang Wei won his second straight title.

Today's Birthdays: Pianist Arthur Ferrante is 87. Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, is 84. Jazz musician Sonny Rollins is 78. Singer Alfa Anderson (Chic) is 62.

Holly Hunter, in her own words

Thoughts on some of her most memorable roles

'Raising Arizona'

MORE ARTICLES:
SPECIAL REPORT

The Oscar winner weighs in on a sampling of her most memorable roles.

Broadcast News (1987)
"The movie has not dated at all, and that's an accomplishment, because it's about an industry that's in constant flux. For Jim Brooks to have harnessed a truth about how network news is made and where it was headed in 1986 was very prescient. In fact, it's probably more relevant now. I learned a huge amount from Bill Hurt and use it to this day. I took things from his habits and his reverence for his work and the way he behaved on the set. He was my first mentor, even though he didn't know it."

Raising Arizona (1987)
"What can you say about the Coens? It's like extended family. They still have the same script supervisor they had back then, the same sound guy and accountant, and they often work with the same actors over and over again. I've done three projects with them, and we've all stayed really close friends."

The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom (1993)
"That's the most fun I ever had. I had a blast with Beau Bridges and Michael Ritchie, who was such an amazing filmmaker. I've had the opportunity to work with so many powerful directors, for whom it was a true calling. They didn't fall into it. They had to direct."

The Firm (1993)
"I loved playing the character, but I kept wishing it was a bigger role. I'd get down to Memphis -- and I loved being there -- and then I'd do my scene and have to go back to New York. 'The party's over?' That party didn't last long enough!"

The Piano (1993)
"Jane Campion remains one of the most formative people in my life. I really pursued that movie, felt that I was right for it (even when) no one else did. But Jane was enough of a true independent individual to keep an open mind regarding me. A lot of people would have said, 'She's just not right, I don't need to see her.' And Jane said, 'If she really feels this strongly, I'll be glad to see her.' She gave me the chance to change her mind."

Thirteen (2003)
"I look back on it with nothing but great enthusiasm and love because of the voice that (writer) Nikki Reed and (writer-director) Catherine Hardwicke found together. They both wrote in this journal -- that was incredibly magical of Catherine to suggest she and Nikki do that. Nikki was an avid journal keeper well before then, so she already had the writing habit, and Catherine had the gift to see that it could be something they could do together."

DVD Review: Rocking Across the Inspired and Intoxicated Universe*

By Andrew William Smith, Editor
2008.2

Visually intoxicating and emotionally inspired, Julie Taymor’s Across
The Universe redefines the rock musical as she retells the story of
the 1960s counterculture by reinterpreting classic songs from the
Beatles catalog.

Mixing a sappy love story with an incendiary political situation and
painting it all with an epic brush across a wildly-costumed,
brilliantly-choreographed, and polychromatic palette, ambitious
auteur Taymor has achieved the artistically impossible, constructing
prophetic nostalgia and seamless narrative in the form of a feature-
length music video.

Ignoring her potential detractors, Taymor treads well-traveled byways
of familiar cultural motifs with a lyrical levity that ignites our
passions without getting lost in the socially complicated
implications of her endeavor. The lead characters bear names from
Beatles songs like Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max
(Joe Anderson), and Sadie (Dana Fuchs). These overlapping lives light
fires of historical significance to warm our jaded memories of a time
period that defined a culture war that has lasted for decades since.
Every scene and song provide memorable highlights, but some in
particular stand out for me.

The already enormous “Let It Be” gets recast as an emotionally-loaded
gospel revival against the chilling backdrop of the parallel
casualties wrought by the Detroit riots and the Vietnam war. Carol
Woods’s wondrous performance haunts with its poignant beauty after
repeated viewings and listenings.

An imagined super-group collaboration between Janis Joplin and Jim
Hendrix comes alive in the relationship between Sadie and Jo Jo
(Martin Luther). When Lucy leaves her sheltered suburban reality to
discover the urban grit of New York City, she gets the full immersion
experience a wickedly rocking version of Sadie’s band performing “Why
Don’t We Do It in the Road.”

The rudely claustrophobic rendering of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”
transforms the military induction rite of passage with riveting
images and dystopian riffs—sort of like the Matrix meets MC Escher.
Much to Max’s disdain, when Uncle Sam puts out the call for cannon
fodder, even someone who claims to be a “crossdressing homosexual
pacifist” will do—as long as he doesn’t have flat feet.

Under the wonderfully fantastic tutelage of Taymor’s wide angle
wisdom, each song gets treated like a sacred text to be taught to an
audience of acolytes aspiring to be members of the psychedelic
clergy. In the cosmically delectable trifecta of “I Am the Walrus,”
“Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite,” and “Because,” Taymor captures
the topsy-turvy and mentally curvy magic of the times.

An unlikely candidate for the day-glo guru giving out shots of
electric koolaid, Bono’s brilliant Dr. Robert does creative justice
to the merry pranks of Ken Kesey’s kind with the spontaneous poetry
of “We’re navigators. We’re aviators. We’re eatin’ taters,
masturbating alligators. Bombardiers, we got no fears. We shed no
tears. We’re pushing the frontiers of transcendental perception.”

When “Dr. Geary” at the “League of Spiritual Deliverance” refuses to
meet with Bono and his band of sisters and brothers, the scene soon
switches to the surreal circus tents commandeered by Eddie Izzard’s
Mr. Kite. Creating a mood reminiscent of festive scenes like the
Bread and Puppet Theater or Burning Man, Taymor takes us down the
rabbit hole with a special effects budget and sensibility so savvy
that she can recreate the “sixties trip” without any side-effects,
legal worries, or mental hangover.

But Taymor doesn’t just employ her keenly kaleidoscopic directorial
eye to conjure fantastic communal bliss, she also taps into the
terrifying aspects of the times, from jangling with Max through the
jungles of ‘nam to watching Jude paint his protest in a stunningly
apocalyptic version of “Strawberry Fields” that literally must be
seen to be believed.

As Lucy gets swept away by the rhetoric of an increasingly angry anti-
war movement and the charismatic magnetism of one of its key
organizers, she starts to lose Jude. In a charged scene that reminds
us that every battle small and large is really about love, envy,
loss, and unresolved emotions, Jude’s heart-wrenching “Revolution”
reminds us that the real resolutions for peace must first be made
inside the human heart.

Across The Universe is a movie I’ve waited decades for. As a young
child with wide eyes, I discovered the fabled genre of the rock
musical in the theater and on the widescreen. With a vivid
imagination, I starred on the stage of my bedroom and entertained
myself with repeated listens to the soundtracks to Hair, Godspell ,
and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Since those lazy pre-adolescent afternoons in the 1970s, I have
sought a cinematic or theatrical feat to feel so alive that I would
once again be compelled to dance around my room and sing along
without a care. Efforts like Tommy, The Rocky Horror Picture Show,
The Wiz, or Rent may have come close. But for my inclinations, no
other rock opera has captured that original magic on stage or screen.
Until now.

Of course, having Lennon and McCartney score already penned on the
ears of eternity, Taymor had a particular advantage. With Across The
Universe, Julie Taymor give us an amazing gift for our times, for all
time.

Nikki Reed Sees ‘Twilight’ As Vampire Film Adds To Cast

11 Comments | Published by Larry Carroll on Thursday, February 14,
2008 at 2:58 pm.
Much like Bella’s eye-opening journey to Port Angeles, the past few
weeks have been filled with revelations for “Twilight” fans
everywhere. Now, as cameras officially begin rolling on the eagerly-
anticipated vampire flick, four more actors have been added to the cast.

MTV News has confirmed exclusively that Nikki Reed (”Thirteen”),
Rachelle Lefevre (”What About Brian”), Cam Cigandet (”The O.C.”) and
Michael Welch (”Joan of Arcadia”) have been cast in the flick based
on Stephenie Meyer’s #1 bestseller. The actors will be playing the
key series roles of Rosalie, Victoria, James and Mike Newton,
respectively.

“Twilight” is currently beginning production in the Portland, Oregon
area, and is targeting a late-2008/early-2009 release.

Head on over to our main movie site for the full scoop on all the new
vampires and humans. In addition, the mysterious Cullen family are
expected to be revealed next week (possibly with the first photo from
the film), and soon afterwards we can expect names for the roles of
such key characters as Jasper Hale, Billy Black, Jacob Black and
Charlie Swan.

Which actors would you cast in those remaining roles? How do you feel
about the additions of Nikki Reed and the others?

GRAMMY AWARDS COMMENTARY

The Grammys: The dis-chord's the fun part

Say what you will about the Grammys -- that they're nothing more than self-congratulatory drivel from out-of-touch Recording Academy members; they're riddled with colossal errors in judgment, such as when lip-syncing duo Milli Vanilli took the Best New Artist trophy in 1990; or that the number of categories has ballooned to a ridiculous 110. (Best Hawaiian, Native American and polka albums? Seriously?)

But the Grammy Awards are still music's highest honor, the Oscars of the record industry. Otherwise, why would the long list of talent at the show include superstars Beyoncé, Foo Fighters, Natalie Cole, Bonnie Raitt, Carrie Underwood, Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige, to name just a few?

The perennial star power certainly doesn't mean the Grammys do everything right. Each year, you can almost hear a collective groan from music fans as soon as the nominations are announced -- and again after the statuettes are handed out. A Taste of Honey beat Elvis Costello in 1979 for Best New Artist. Boogie Oogie Oogie, indeed. Two years later, Christopher Cross became the only artist ever to sweep the big four -- Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. And where has he been the past 25 years?

This time around, the blunders include snubs of Bruce Springsteen's powerful album Magic and the White Stripes' primal rocker Icky Thump for Album of the Year, and the failures of Daughtry and the Plain White T's to gain Best New Artist nods.

STEP IT UP, GUYS

Which brings us to the observation that all the Best New Artist nominees are women. That's fine, especially in a year that could see the United States' first female president. Grammy got it right with Canadian folkie Feist, country darling Taylor Swift and force of nature Amy Winehouse, who should take this award, plus several others. But R&B singer Ledisi (who?) and formulaic pop-punk band Paramore?

The rest of the categories are far more eclectic, a nice mix of generations, genders and genres. Kanye West, whose album Graduation sold almost a million copies in its first week and is a near shoo-in to win Album of the Year (Winehouse's Back to Black is its only real competition), is the big winner with eight nominations. Winehouse has six, while Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and T-Pain each garnered five.

Regardless of who wins what, the awards show -- broadcast live from Los Angeles' Staples Center at 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS -- is loaded with talent. Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Feist and Brad Paisley are among the stars scheduled to perform, though they're about as interesting as an afternoon nap compared with Winehouse, whose vocal talent is surpassed only by her Britney-like penchant for trouble and who recently caved in to the fact that saying ''no, no, no'' to rehab was no longer an option.

The Brit soul sensation is being treated at a London rehabilitation center for substance abuse. After being turned down earlier in the week, her U.S. visa request was unexpectedly granted Friday afternoon, and the singer seems determined to travel. If she does manage to show, expect lots of fireworks, but let's hope she leaves the crack pipe at home. (Actually, she'll have to: A drug test is required for the visa.)

Also, expect a lump-in-your-throat moment when Kanye West picks up his first trophy of the night -- he's sure to give an emotional tribute to his mother, who died in November after complications from plastic surgery.

LATIN FIRSTS

Two independent Latin artists have been surprised with nominations among much better-known acts with considerably more marketing muscle. Sones de México, a Chicago-based Mexican folk band, has been nominated for Best Regional Mexican Album along with longtime stars such as Vicente Fernandez and Pepe Aguilar. Sones' CD, Esta tierra es tuya (This Land Is Your Land), is a Mexican immigrant version of Woody Guthrie's American anthem and also includes tributes to Bach and Led Zeppelin.

Chris Murphy, producer of Liberación: The Songs of the New Cuban Underground, which was nominated for Best Long Form Video, discovered the Australian rockers INXS. But he couldn't find anyone to release the DVD and CD of unknown reggaeton-influenced rappers he recorded in Santiago de Cuba, so he released them on his own Petrol Records.

Despite the underground buzz on Cuban rap since the late 1990s, this is the first time it has received this kind of industry recognition.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

The Beatles, once again, will be celebrated -- and, really, who can get enough of the Fab Four? It's not your run-of-the-mill nod to John, Paul, George and Ringo, either -- the incredible Cirque du Soleil will offer an acrobatic, artistic interpretation of producer George Martin's The Beatles LOVE, his cut-and-paste sonic love letter to the band that, with his help, changed musical history.

Also on hand will be the cast of Across the Universe, the musical by Julie Taymor (Frida) starring Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood, who sang Beatles songs in the film and on its soundtrack. Will Wood's boyfriend Marilyn Manson be lurking in the shadows? Will his jilted ex-wife Dita von Teese crash the party? Stay tuned!

Miami Herald staff writer Jordan Levin contributed to this report.

Across the Universe (2007) Movie Review

Across the Universe
Starring: Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther, T.V. Carpio
Directed By: Julie Taymor
Written By: Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais
Released: 2007
Grade: B+
Across the Universe is a dramatic musical, built with the work of The Beatles. The songs are used through different characters and even different situations. The time period is similar as the film takes place during the Vietnam war. It would have been easier to make this a film about The Beatles. The songs came from their lives anyway so it would just be a matter of recreating those situations. Across the Universe gives the thoughts and feelings of the music to completely different characters in different situations. It shows us that one song can mean so many different things to other people.
Jude (Sturgess) is a dock worker/artist from England who travels to America, leaving his girlfriend behind, in hopes of finding his father. Along his way he meets Max, who has been enjoying his time at college. The two of them become friends and on their way to New York, Max’s sister, Lucy (Wood) joins them for the summer before she goes off to college in the fall. Lucy is going through a lot as her boyfriend, Daniel, is sent home from the war early. The problem with this is that he is sent home in a body bag. His is the first funeral Lucy has ever gone to. He was the first person she knew dead and he happened to be her first love. Despite this, a new love begins to sprout between her and Jude.
Soon Max gets his draft notice as well. His only hope is that maybe he will find a way out of it. Lucy hates to see someone else she loves dead because of Vietnam. She becomes extremely involved in the protest against the war. Lucy really doesn’t understand how anybody couldn’t be. This is where fighting with her and Jude begin. He is having trouble with his art, partially from missing Lucy as she always seems to be gone, too busy for him. To her art doesn’t seem as important as the revolution that is arising. When he does protest with her, they both are detained by the police. This leads to the government finding out that Jude is not a citizen and therefore is sent back to England.
Evan Rachel Wood not only gives an outstanding performance as an actor but as a singer. She has a beautiful voice and I am glad she was able to put both talents to use in this wonderful film. Jim Sturgess as Jude was incredible as well. Wood and Sturgess had great chemistry together. Watching them together was captivating. Sturgess held a strong persona, someone who had an inner struggle that was shown through his art of song and painting. Joe Anderson helped balance out the more serious characters of Jude and Lucy. He was the goofy one yet not overdone at all. When he was faced with serious times he tried to find his way out, but he had to face his future whether he liked it or not.
One of the things Across the Universe does best is the visual aspects of the film. It is a ballsy film, never playing it safe. This is very refreshing as Hollywood is usually just recycled and reused scripts. Across the Universe is wonderfully and wildly creative like nothing I have ever seen before. It embraces this through scenes that put you in a trance of the unknown, a place where the imagination is always alive and at work. The colors are vivid, spectacular, and continuous. There are all different types of transitions, where anything seems appropriate no matter how out there it might be. The colors show the spirits of the kids; freedom and fun. However, they do more than that. They show us the lines between two worlds. While this world is so beautiful and bright, the world of Vietnam is dark, dreary, and musky. It is a sad and solemn state where only tragedy can occur. As much as this part of the universe is a part of them and the characters recognize it, ideally they would love for this not to be a part of their world. Knowing and seeing someone who died in Vietnam is like a wake up call to Lucy. Death becomes real, it hits close to home, and the idea of this spreading to others is unthinkable to her. Yet this reality of violence and death become a direct part of her world.
The time period of the sixties was represented in the film. The protest where they get arrested actually happened at Columbia University at this time. The bombs that were being created in the film were created by radicals that ended up being killed by an explosion in New York. The music, even aside from The Beatles is represented as well. Two of the characters in particular follow this. Two of the teens’ roommates, Sadie (Fucs) and JoJo (Luther) were modeled after artists of the time. Sadie was representing Janis Joplin, a role that was specifically created for Dana Fuchs. The character of JoJo was meant to represent Jimi Hendrix. All of the character’s names come from various Beatles songs including these two.
The songs were wonderfully revived by the actors/characters in the film. My only problem with it, and the biggest problem with the film, is that there are a bit too many songs. The movie is jam packed with song after song, sometimes when there wasn’t much of a break since the last one. The music through the movie is very fun, but sometimes less is more. This is one reason that I am not sure if I can recommend this to everyone. If you don’t like musicals there is a good chance that you won’t like this due to the amount of singing. The movie is on the lengthier side at 2 hours and 13 minutes. This really flew by for me though. You get caught up in the movie and you are taken away by it. If you are a fan of The Beatles, this should be really interesting for you to see the way the songs were perceived and shown. Most people should be able to enjoy some part of this film weather it’s the context, themes, songs, acting, or amazing visual sights.
