You can do that but you will get stuttery video. If it's not too bad, just
recapture it in a 30 frame project and add the sound that you exported as AIFF
from your 23.98. Then you can rebuild or replace any shots that are too
objectionable in the 30 frame project.

Stand by Terry -

If this works, I have a local friend on MC4.0 who owes me some favors -
AND who works out of their home, so she only has to run down the steps to
the basement rather than drive anywhere. I'll try her first before I ask
you to make a special trip.

Thanks again!!

Ah, that would help A LOT. That would take me down to just re-digitizing
and re-rendering, rather than having to re create all the Pan and Zoom
effects.

I'm not on 4.0 yet - my box is too old, and I'm trying to limp it along
until I can get a new Mac. I'll shoot the sequence over off list.

I REALLY appreciate this help. Might actually make it possible for me to

Just out of curiosity -

I can digital cut to DVCam from the 23.975 project, but I get no sound.
How much pain would I be in for to go down the track of solving the sound
issue, rather than re-cutting the entire sequence in 30i? Just
thinking....

Mark,

I do have one more suggestion since there are so many Pan and Zoom effects.
Do you have access to a copy of 4.0? If so, you can convert the sequence from
23.98 to 29.97. All the clips won't change frame rates, so you would still want
to use the EDL route for them.

Now cut the EDLed clip timeline on an upper track of your converted
timeline. Drag the 30 frame clips down to replace their counterparts on the
converted timeline. The effects should all translate which will save all of your
titles, P&Z and other effects.

If you don't have access to 4.0, send me the sequence and I can go in and
convert it for you. Or maybe someone else on the list is already at work with a
4.0 system and can help you faster.

Dave,

How long have you known me again? At least 10 to 15 years. And you still
don't get my sense of humor? This was not a personal anything against you Dave.
It was a venting of the frustration I've accumulated over the years working with
the EDL manager as an archaic workaround to something that FCP can handle
without a problem.

I agree there are a lot of off topic discussions here, but that has always
been the beauty of the L. Think of it like an Editors' Lounge. But of folks who
have a lot o common interests and experiences who enjoy sharing them.

If you want straight talk of nothing but Avid and Avid vs. FCP then I
suggest you check out the community forums on the Avid site itself. (Though I
still get an occasional shot in there also).

Dave,

I have always enjoyed the sense of humour and wide ranging topics from
Terry and other members of the L2. There are other forums on Avid
related topics which are rather tightly wound. Some of which do have
so-called policies on who gets to talk.

Of late the OT: (off topic) designation has been left off of posts a bit
more often than I might like on a busy day or week. However many of
those posts are part of the charm of the original L and the L2. The L
and the BBS preceding the L has not just been a place to get solid
information on Avids but a place to get that 30" second refresher
especially for those of us who no longer smoke and who either choose not
to keep a bottle in the bottom of the desk or work in places where it is
no longer considered acceptable to do so.

For some of us it is also an outlet for frustration. Maybe not the best
place but certainly a better alternative than going postal. I know there
have been posts I have made over the years where I regretted not adding
a smiley face or even posting at all. I thank all the members of the L
for reading between the lines on those posts and putting up with my
prattle over the years. At any given time I try to read between the
lines on the posts from my colleagues and comrades here if my patience
allows. Everyone has off days, weeks, months and sometimes years. The L
is an outlet for humour and frustration as well as a place of solid
technical information, workflow, inspiration and non-political,
non-religious ideas.

The last resort which I have only exercised extremely rarely (and not
since the L2 began) is to add a filter to my mail which sends postings
from particular people straight to the trash. The ultimate solution to
irritation.

I'm with you, David - I thought Terry's comment was amusing, myself.

Wow.

I took it as a more amusing way saying, "Then cross your fingers and hope

Sorry Terry -

Am on the east coast of the US. Gave up and went home to get some sleep
about 1:30am because I was getting whiplash from my head hitting the
back of the chair. Back at it in the morning.

Thanks for your help.

Already done, but my neighbor is pissed off about his chicken. It was
close to a full moon last night so that should have helped.

The issue seems to be all the pan and scan effects. This is a living
history type project with interviews and still images. That - and
because I was monitoring on a full screen SVGA monitor instead of
through a firewire device - is why I didn't see the stutter. The
interveiws didn't move all that much - and the pan-and-scans were all
rendered at 24p. My warning came when the proof copy DVD - converted in
Squeeze to 30i looked stuttered, and then I couldn't output to DVCam.
The client - a veteran broadcast professional - never even noticed.

Already told the wife and kids I'll see them Monday morning. It's
looking like a very long weekend. This morning I'll try deleting all
the stills from the sequence and try importing it through the edl
manager again. At least that will save some time.

Thanks for the help Terry. If you get any other brainstorms that might
save my sanity and allow me to get some sleep this weekend, let me know.

Mark

This is what caused the Original Avid-L to become L2. I am sure
Editors can learn from history.
Let it be so.

The odd part is that judging by the posts, it actually sounds like Terry has
higher regard for DS than Knut does.

Hey, what's the deal? I have often seen you make snide remarks about posts that
discuss actual AVID issues. Have I ticked you off in some way?

I have also often heard comments off line about how people don't want to
participate in querries or discussions on this list because some in the group
are so quick to criticize or make personal attacks.

I don't care so much, I've learned to get a pretty thick skin over the years,
but I feel that in general the environment here fails to lending itself to open
discussion. Maybe I didn't get the memo on who gets to talk and who doesn't.

I also don't get why this group likes to have literally hundreds of discussions
on food and puppies, as opposed to experiences with using the AVID products, or
ideas about workflow. I realize some questions seem ill formed or silly to
those of us that have been editing for decades, but it wouldn't hurt for any of
us to show a bit more patience.

Have a nice weekend...

Also, don't forget to:

Draw a pentagram in the dirt by hand.

Under the light of the moon, sacrifice a live chicken.

Rotate counter clockwise three times while chanting "kcus nac ygolonhcet" a
being ever so careful not to STEP OUTSIDE the pentagram.

And maybe it will work...

A fresh installation will not kill your projects or media.
For safety, just make a backup of your Avid Projects folder.

Please guide me to a fresh installation of MC 3.1.3, without losing my projects.

The main problem I face is that MOJO is not fully functional, i.e. playback of
timeline stops and I have to hear audio through the Digidesign 002 Mixer!

Thanks
David Deane

Also, don't forget to:

Draw a pentagram in the dirt by hand.

Under the light of the moon, sacrifice a live chicken.

Rotate counter clockwise three times while chanting "kcus nac ygolonhcet" a
being ever so careful not to STEP OUTSIDE the pentagram.

And maybe it will work...

A few suggestions to tame the beast that is EDL Manager:

1) Turn off Optimize EDL.

2) Turn on "Show Dissolves as Cuts" "Show Audio Dissolves as Cuts" and "Show
Wipes as Cuts"

3) Promote motion effects to timewarps, or remove them all together.

4) Instead of clicking on the arrow buttons in the EDL window, use the menu
commands for "Get Current Sequence" (command-G or ctrl-G) and "Create Composer
Sequence" (Command-M or ctrl-M).

5) Re-name reels to 8 characters or less before you create EDL, and use CMX3600
as your EDL format, because it allows up to 8 character alphanumeric reel names,
and many tracks of audio.

6) Check that you have valid TC in the Source TC format you have chosen, and it
matches the frame rate of the Rec TC in the EDL Manager window.

Another gotcha is that when people upgrade the Editor (Media Composer,
Symphony) they often forget to upgrade the version of EDL Manager. Re-Install
EDL Manager from the same version diskor download as your edit software.

Each of the above has caused EDL manager to crash on me at one time or another,
on various versions of the software. I don't suggest doing all of them at once,
just try each to see if EDL Manager stops crashing.

Hope this helps,

Dave Hogan

30I source.
Mostly talking heads, so didn't notice the herky jerky.
No access to a symphony, so I guess it's no sleep this weekend.

Thanks
