Cross-post Avid-L2 and ACI-L:

Question #1:

My goal is to compile a list of available plug-ins for MC v3 and above
(both audio and video) and make the list available on my site.
Avid has a list, but I don't think it's complete... for example, right
I off I see that Automatic Duck isn't listed:
http://www.avid.com/thirdparty/guide/guide-list.asp?category=Video+Developers%3A\
+AVX

^ What/Who is missing from that list?

Dumb question #1 that Goggling didn't solve for me:

- Is there a list of who, what, where for Media Composer _audio_ plug-
ins?

Dumb question #2:

Can MC use any DigiDesign audio plugin? Or any audio plug-in that
works with ProTools?

Danke . . .

Wow! Thanks for the information! The new P2 guide will be very useful
indeed. A new bible for this multi format/multi frame rate/multi resolution
days.

Thank you Rupert for the information, will have to make some tests and see
which is the best approach.
Thanks again.

Greg,

Not trying to come across as a pessimist, but: does it work?
I mean: is it past alpha/beta stage, and can you use this on daily dailies?
Is it shipping, or are you one of the happy few selected to start using this

Disable Autorun in local policies.
Disable front USB ports on your editing CPUs.
Local Windows User Accounts are NOT Administrators.

We set up an internal FTP server that is scanned actively. All files
(graphics, etc...) are copied to that server first. It's a two step
process but we managed to avoid getting hit by Conficker or Downadup.

We enforce a strict "No USB Thumb Drive" policy. Any editor that
bypasses this policy will have his edit system re-imaged with no
opportunity to back up his or her "personal" files.

Remember that Site Settings are not retroactive; they only get applied
to NEW Users or Projects that you create.

That being said, I have found that Media Creation settings are
notoriously volatile. Even if they're applied properly, I have found
that quick effects and "Fit to Fill" can bypass what you think is
happening.

Chris Magid - do you use different Windows User settings with
different Unity read/write permissions? Also, what version of editing
application are you using?

Yes. This is the same procedure for creating Site Settings in general. However,
it does not seem to update the setting into a site setting as it is still
labeled PROJECT in both the site setting window and in the settings tab in the
project window.

Drag it into the Site Setting file (special menu)? Not sure
how your

SAN volumes mount but a regular annoyance on Unity systems is that

since Avid identifies the volumes by the assigned drive letter, the

Media Creation settings only stick if the drive letter is constant

from one session to the next and across all workstations. I can do it

in Unity . . .

We saw a major infestation of the Autostart/doubleclick worm recently,
on machines that are shielded from the internet and problem free for years..

With USB - there is no safe place to hide. Dipshit editor downloads a
graphic from the web onto his flash drive and before you know it,
nasties are on every machine in the workgroup.

This one had made hundreds of copies before being found out. There was
no backup disk image so it required rebuilding the OS and drivers from
scratch. A worthless and thankless job.

Norton is no longer off by default. Retraining the editors takes more time.

In that case, buy an Epson, no matter what type.

Hey Bouke -

It would be a handful a week at best. These are all one-offs, so speed is
not much of an issue. Thanks.

Some P2 Cameras have an option to create MP4 proxy files.

This is the optional board: http://snipurl.com/t1lct

Avid just posted an updated P2/AMA workflow document:
http://www.avid.com/p2/P2_AMA_WF_GUIDE.pdf

Page 14 talks about Proxy files recorded by P2. The short answer is no, with P2,
the proxies doesn't work this way.

This is an old Offline/Online P2 workflow tutorial I did:
http://snipurl.com/sxsax
The P2 media can be transcoded to 15:1 and that can sent to you.

The flashing means you need to power off and then on for it to take effect.
The 1200 manula is available online as a PDF if you google around for it.

P2 does not make proxies but you can get them to push it through
Proxymill from www.imagineproducts.com and send the results to you.

Long ago I suggested to Avid the ability to create a text file as sort of a
config file that the composer could read on launch with all sorts of
administrator level default settings to keep a facility full of people on the
same page for many settings...including locking out resolutions.

That sounds like a great idea!

Yes. This is the same procedure for creating Site Settings in general. However,
it does not seem to update the setting into a site setting as it is still
labeled PROJECT in both the site setting window and in the settings tab in the
project window.

Drag it into the Site Setting file (special menu)? Not sure
how your

since Avid identifies the volumes by the assigned drive letter, the

Is THAT why they don't stick?
It seems to me that I've recently worked in an environment where I was the only
one mounting my assigned online drives, and care was taken to make sure they
mounted with certain drive letter designations (so Pan and Zoom wouldn't get
confused). The damn media creation settings STILL slipped. They seemed to always
want to revert to the emptiest drive.

I'm assuming that you can open up the site settings file and drag the individual
user setting that you want to see reflected facility wide over from the Project
window into the site settings window. Have you tried this yet? I never have, and
in all honesty, I don't know if media creation functions similarly to other user
settings
If this works, what it means is that every time a new user is created, that
user's individual media creation setting should reflect the site setting. As to
existing user settings, I don't think they would be changed. Of course, the
problem I've had for years with media creation settings is that the stupid
things don't seem to stick. I set them over and over, only to find that the
machine is once again trying to render to the C drive.
