Description

I started collecting paperbacks with Berkley's 1958 release of "Kill Me In Tokyo" by Earl Norman. The series didn't take off until the 1960s, however. The action sixties led to the exploding seventies with a variety of paperback series that filled the racks with colorful covers offering exciting action and adventure. The publishers were reinventing the old action heroes by reaching back in the past for inspiration. Belmont Books gave us The Shadow in 1963, followed by Bantam’s Doc Savage in 1964. Two characters from the 1930s pulp era, which soon followed with reprints of The Spider from Berkley. Corinth Regency, out of California, brought out a poorly circulated series of their own in 1965, reprinting such notables as the Phantom Detective, Secret Agent X, Operator #5, Dusty Ayres, and Doctor Death. New paperback heroes also hit the stands, with authors like Earl Norman’s Burns Bannion “Kill Me” series, followed soon after by the Executioner, Nick Carter - Killmaster, Destroyer, Butcher, then followed by dozens of TV tie-ins like Man & Girl From U.N.C.L.E., The Avengers, and a fist-full of other titles. The action hasn’t ceased. But it’s those early titles that this group is dedicated to. Members should be fans of those paperback novels. Sharing of covers is appreciated. I don’t expect many members, but I do ask that everyone refrain from flaming, or using language to express yourself. There are many individual groups already established for some characters, such as The Shadow, Doc Savage, The Spider, Nick Carter, Earl Norman, and others. Also, see the Aggressor Series for coverage of many of the later action series.
